I recently re-read a favourite first book in a series for a group read - it was a nice excuse to revisit Sebastian St Cyr, Viscount Devlin, in London in 1811. He's accused of murder, so while dodging the police, he puts his army intelligence experience to good use to find the villain and save himself. Perfect blend of history and mystery.
