When a voice wakes you up in the middle of the night and tells you to write a fiction series, what’s a writer to do? That’s how I came to create Selkie Moon, after this nocturnal message. I sat down at the keyboard until Selkie Moon turned up -- a modern woman with a mythical name. Soon I was hooked, exploring far-flung places full of secrets where Selkie delves into psychological clues tangled up in the local folklore.

Before Selkie Moon invaded my life, I'd been a teacher, an unemployed ex-teacher, the author of over 50 children’s books, an audio-book producer, a workshop presenter and a prize-winning publisher. These days I live in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney with my husband, where I disappear each day into Selkie Moon’s latest myst

I have seen another reviewer I know actually hide her comment under a "spoiler" label that can then be clicked but who knows how to do that??

Interesting that you didn't regard it as a spoiler -- I guess as the author I'm especially sensitive. I've had other readers tell me that the creeping dread about what's going to happen has made the story a great read, so I guess knowing some of those elements in advance might "spoil" that part.

I'm happy with what you've done and good to have met you because of it :-)

Cheers

How I Found a Ghost for my Ghost Story

In my folktale collection Leaving Birds, the longest story ‘Peig’s Place’ evolved by combining three unique ingredients: personal experience, research into true encounters with ghosts, and the perfect superstition from Irish folklore to give this modern story its chilling twist. Along the way, I met the ghost who haunts 'Peig's Place'.

Topics Mentioning This Author

“The characters in my novels are my own unrealized possibilities. That is why I am equally fond of them all and equally horrified by them. Each one has crossed a border that I myself have circumvented. It is that crossed border which attracts me most. For beyond that border begins the secret the novel asks about.”
Milan Kundera

“Every moment happens twice: inside and outside, and they are two different histories.”
Zadie Smith, White Teeth

“Sometimes, I feel the past and the future pressing so hard on either side that there's no room for the present at all.”
Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited

“The important thing in writing is the capacity to astonish. Not shock—shock is a worn-out word—but astonish.”
Terry Southern

“Perhaps the future belongs to magic, and it's we women who control magic.”
J. G. Ballard, Rushing to Paradise
