When a voice wakes you up in the middle of the night and tells you to write a mystery series, what’s a writer to do? That’s how I came to create Selkie Moon, after a massage from a strange woman with gifted hands was followed by this nocturnal message. I sat down at the keyboard until Selkie Moon turned up -- a modern woman with a mythical name. Soon I was hooked, exploring far-flung places full of secrets where Selkie delves into psychological clues tangled up in the local mythology.

Before Selkie Moon invaded my life, I'd been a teacher, an unemployed ex-teacher, the author of over 50 children’s books, an audio-book producer, a workshop presenter and a prize-winning publisher. These days I live in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney with my

I have seen another reviewer I know actually hide her comment under a "spoiler" label that can then be clicked but who knows how to do that??

Interesting that you didn't regard it as a spoiler -- I guess as the author I'm especially sensitive. I've had other readers tell me that the creeping dread about what's going to happen has made the story a great read, so I guess knowing some of those elements in advance might "spoil" that part.

I'm happy with what you've done and good to have met you because of it :-)

Cheers

The Bottomless Black Hole of Ideas

Ideas are everywhere. But it takes some practice to notice them, then add a dash of imagination to tweak them into something bigger. In this post, I explain how the weird and unexpected turned up when I was doing something else. I’m using it as a springboard for creating clues and threads in Selkie Moon’s next mystery, with a little help from her fans ...

Topics Mentioning This Author

Milan Kundera
“The characters in my novels are my own unrealized possibilities. That is why I am equally fond of them all and equally horrified by them. Each one has crossed a border that I myself have circumvented. It is that crossed border which attracts me most. For beyond that border begins the secret the novel asks about.”
Milan Kundera

Zadie Smith
“Every moment happens twice: inside and outside, and they are two different histories.”
Zadie Smith, White Teeth

Evelyn Waugh
“Sometimes, I feel the past and the future pressing so hard on either side that there's no room for the present at all.”
Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited: The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder

Terry Southern
“The important thing in writing is the capacity to astonish. Not shock—shock is a worn-out word—but astonish.”
Terry Southern

J.G. Ballard
“Perhaps the future belongs to magic, and it's we women who control magic.”
J. G. Ballard, Rushing to Paradise
