XOXO was a surprising delight discovered because of the K-Pop prompt this year! I recommended it to others so any times for that prompt.

Ilona Andrews Innkeeper series. Both the inn itself and Beastie are non-verbal characters. The first book in the series is just ok but the 2nd is where the series takes off.

There are other books where the house is a full non-verbal character - A Discovery of Witches and White Is for Witching.

And isn't the car in one of Stepen King's books a non-verbal character?

I think this prompt has many possibilities if you unlock from thinking 'human'.

Or Kujo? Or the animals in Pet Cemetery? I don't actually know, I'm just guessing.

The 3rd spirit in A Christmas Carol never talks.

It seems like there should be some creepy books where there's a character that just watches and never says a word.

Yeah it's always been that way. It's weird because Amazon is one of the first sites to have a really good search engine, but I guess they never gave that to Goodreads. Listopia search sucks."

I still believe Bezos just bought Goodreads as an advertising mechanism for Amazon. Plus, he really wants to be the only publisher...that was his stated goal per one of his underlings when he first established Amazon selling books online. Ugh. I wish he had left Goodreads alone.

"*XOXO (XOXO #1) by Axie Oh ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ was an extremely enjoyable read for me!

OMG it's a book we agree on!!! I loved XOXO & ASAP so much! they were so cute!!! I wish she would write a third one in that world. She's got a fantasy novel coming out in 2025, but I wasn't so crazy about The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea (I DNF'ed it, actually) so I'm not so sure if I'll like it."

I know! Isn't it fun when that happens? LOL The last 100 page sof TGWFBtS saved it for me, but it was still just a 4-star read for me, which, as you know, means it disappointed me a bit. I plan to read ASAP in 2025. 😁👍

Britany | 1698 comments I'm reading XOXO right now, so all these positive reviews are making me excited. I just started the audio yesterday.

There's a lot more out there than will come to mind. How about HP? Hogwarts itself is a silent character. There's also Mrs. Norris, Fang, Cruickshanks, Norbert, and the Hippogriffe.

I have a fondness for books where buildings are really full blown characters.

Megan | 481 comments Quick check-in for me since I still have a million things to do today. Weekend time seems to move at twice the speed sometimes! This is a two-week check-in since I missed last week. I've finished two books and two short stories, and should finish up one novel tonight (just two chapters left). I'm at 22/45 and 3/5 for this challenge (and suspect this is where I'll stay through the end of the year), and 101/100 for my overall Goodreads Reading Challenge. Woo-hoo! I made it back into triple digits as I'd hoped I would.

Finished:
* Last Woman Standing by Amy Gentry;
* The Reunion Dinner written by Jesse Q. Sutanto and narrated by Eunice Wong;
* The Menopause Brain: New Science Empowers Women to Navigate the Pivotal Transition with Knowledge and Confidence by Lisa Mosconi; and,
* Crime of Fashion written by Emma Rosenblum and narrated by Brittany Pressley.

Currently Reading:
* The Penguin Book of Murder Mysteries edited by Michael Sims;
* Colored Television by Danzy Senna, which I should finish up tonight; and,
* The Restaurant of Lost Recipes written by Hisashi Kashiwai and translated by Jesse Kirkwood.

QotW:
How many books have you already postponed reading because you've discovered they are PERFECT for a 2025 category? Zero...since I didn't look at the list until I stopped by the discussion threads I missed and saw it had been posted 🤣 I'm probably going to stick with this year's approach, which was to try to use books I already owned or book club reads to check off prompts and get however far I can get using just those (though hopefully to the 50% completion point).

Bea | 649 comments I only have 2 prompts left to plan and will let both sit awhile: prompt 10 (free) and prompt 19 (2025 anticipated book)

If you don't mind reading a middle grade novel, the titular character in Anybody Here Seen Frenchie? is a non-verbal autistic boy. I haven't read it myself, but it's one of the nominees for a local book award, so I would recommend it based on that alone.

I am taking the 2025 anticipated book as another freebie! It doesn't say it has to be published in 2025 so I am counting any book I've been really looking forward to read, no matter when it came out!
