Pirate/Privateer novel, probably 30+ years old, unsure of the plot.

I can't help with a plot, I'm really sorry. I just know there was a sailing ship that gets stranded in a lagoon after being attacked. I think it's carrying hardwoods and that sort of cargo. They set about making repairs but are forced to set up defences on the island and they possibly have to make gunpowder from bird droppings and sulfer that they find on the island.
Might be part of a series of books, couldn't be sure.
