any book in the 40s will work, but some people don't want to read WWII so the moderators made 2 lists to help out.

Furciferous Quaintrelle Bex (bad_girl_bex) | 17 comments I thought that might be it; but had considered that it might also have been a two-parter or something. (Although I'm now also considering the possibility that some people will be going to read a book set in the 1940s, think that it's nothing to do with the war per se but with the odd reference to the fact that war is going on/is emerging/has ended, will end up wanting to know which category of 1940s books their choice fits into. Not entirely rooted in WWII, but exists in a world where such a thing took place and it therefore ended up referencing war, I'm already predicting this exact scenario playing out in the queries of so many people doing this challenge!)

We did create two lists just so the people who already read a ton of historical fiction or who are tired of books focused mainly on WWII can choose something that focuses elsewhere. But it will be very difficult for something (from any country) to not mention the war at all or be set in the aftermath of the war. It's just to show some options of things where it might be less prevalent.

I think the idea of actively seeking out something with as little reference to the war as is possible, might actually be a fun challenge in and of itself; outside of the challenge of reading it. Could be a good way to get creative with the possibilities.
