OMG this is the FIRST TIME EVER that I've already heard of AND READ the Nobel Prize winner.

The Vegetarian was good, I gave it 4 stars, but it is EXTREMELY weird and upsetting. Far weirder and more upsetting than I was prepared for. This woman is mentally ill and she is truly going through some shit. Some of the book is flashbacks to her childhood, and in one of those flashbacks is a horrific scene where a dog is abused. I was not prepared."

YIKES! I already had The Vegetarian on my DO NOT READ shelf just from my own investigations it seemed like a book that would be too upsetting for me and result in nightmares... I was definitely correct!! Thanks for warning everyone!

I feel like that should be talked about more - I was really surprised when I got to it, I had not seen a single review mention it. That's a major trigger for me!!

For sure, if you look this book up on "doesthedogdie" the warning IS there, but it never occurred to me that I had to be cautious about this book!!!

I once read a humor book called You Ruined It For Everyone (You RIFE for short). I believe that is what is going on here...the few a-holes slacking off ruined it for everyone. Just like the kids who refused to log into online school have ruined the idea so badly that California will not even let us move online for a single day if there are floods or fires or some other reason to stay home....nope, kids have to come to school or no $$ for you. My school proposed a 4 day week with the 5th day being online (with a live teacher and a mechanism to pull the privilege from slackers) and nope, no deal.

message 54: by Dubhease (new)

Dubhease | 661 comments Denise - people outside of California have the idea that it's la la land, but that's pretty draconian. The thing is that slackers are going to slack whether in person or online.

Students who goof off during online learning are going to goof off in class.

People who didn't come in 2 days a week aren't going to magically start coming in 3 days a week.

At least my office has an online booking system for desks. Some departments don't. You show up and hope to find one. Or to bring it back to books - they are running a cross over between The Screwtape Letters (hell as a bureaucracy) and the Hunger Games.

Yup slackers going to slack wherever....and non-slackers have to report to the office because of them...

yes this is the true doldrums, and it's why I don't understand why so many people are in a hurry to finish the AtY list! Because ... NOW what do we all do??? Sure, there are books to read LOL but what do we TALK about?

I guess we can talk about books & movies - it's what is on my mind right now ...

I'm reading Drive. I'll probably finish it later today, but I'll count it towards my next week's finishes. I saw the movie a few years ago and it was EXCELLENT, and I usually enjoy neo-noir crime novels, and I love SHORT novels, so I was excited to read this.

But WOW this book is a HOT MESS! I cannot believe how much the movie improved on this. Usually the book is better than the movie, right? But sometimes you do find a movie that's as good as or maybe a little better than the book. ( The Shining, Stardust, The Princess Bride, Fight Club, American Psycho which I DNFed despite loving the movie ...)

But it is rare to find a book that basically sucks, that was turned into a fantastic movie. So, basically, this book & American Psycho. So far. (Oh, and I Am Legend!! MAN that book SUCKED. So, that's three I have found so far! Although the Will Smith movie maybe wasn't all that great either. It was ok)

I read a lot and I watch a lot of movies but there are still a lot of books I need to read that were turned into movies I've seen.

Anyone else? Do you seek out the book after seeing a movie and discovering it was based on a book? Have you found any other books that are worse than the movie?

Dubhease | 661 comments Shrek is a picture book with terrible illustrations and not much story. How we got 4 great movies out of one terrible book, I don't know.

Good one! The book is like a completely different thing from the movie. I liked a lot of Steig's picture books (Pete's a Pizza was particularly memorable, mostly because the title is fun to say), but that one didn't do anything for me.

I just finished reading the short story collection Men Without Women. The first story, the 40 pages Drive My Car, was turned into a fantastic 3 hour movie (it also has bits of some of the other stories)

The book wasn't bad, but the movie is so much better and it's incredible what they did to make the transformation.

LOL I admit I was a LITTLE disappointed when I first saw the movie back when it was new - the book was fresh in my mind and I was disappointed that certain aspects were not in the movie. But, in retrospect, it is an excellent movie, it is STILL an excellent movie, and imo it is as good as if not better than the book.

It was an Oscar nominee for Best Picture, director and adapted screenplay, and winner for international film. That was the impetus to read it. One of my book clubs heavily overlaps with my Oscar nominated films club so I decided to do a theme for 4 months...books nominated for adapted screenplay Oscars. We read Erasure, Men Without Women and Women Talking and agreed the movies were equal to or better than the books. We'll see aboutColm Toibin's Brooklyn next month

wowwww I am apparently ignorant of new movies, because I didn't realize three of those had been made into movies - the only one I've heard of is Brooklyn (and I haven't see it)

They aren't all new:
Women Talking was 2022
Drive My Car was 2021
Erasure was released as American Fiction in 2023

Jennifer W | 1840 comments Lol, I think anything that came out since 2018 is "new"!! I don't think I've watched a non-kids' movie since my daughter was born! We are looking forward to seeing Moana 2 in theaters next month! 😂

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 1360 comments I have no kids, I just turned 30, and I I am excited to see Moana 2 in theaters next month! The Wild Robot was also really good!

message 72: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 1840 comments Hehe, I definitely wasn't being facetious, I AM looking forward to it! Fortunately, I still love kids' movies! We watched the first one shortly after she was born, so I'm sure there was all sorts of postpartum smushy love hormones involved!

Wild Robot looks cute, but also looks like I would be sobbing by the end of it.

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 1360 comments Glad to hear it! I have started seeing Disney/Dreamworks/etc as family movies, as they are intended for everyone. Kids movies to me are like movies truly meant for kids and kids alone, like the Peppa Pig movie, haha!

Ohman I cried several times throughout The Wild Robot not gonna lie xD

I don't recommend The Mystic Heart. It is poorly written. As for The Tensorate Series, I don't really recommend it either. I was hoping it was an idea-heavy book, but it mostly remains political intrigue.

I DO recommend The Life Impossible by Matt Haig. It's a feel-good book.

Bea | 659 comments I haven't been to movies in ages! Usually I watch on streaming services if I watch at all. However, I took a friend and went to see Wild Robot several weeks ago. Wonderful! Yes, there were tears...but it all works out.
