Yay - I remembered/figured out who the bad guy was before the end! 🙄 (One would think that would be easier after a couple of rereads...) This series is just comfort reading for me, with the occasional stressful times mixed in. I love watching Roarke and Eve navigate their relationship! And as always, I loved Susan Ericksen's narration!

Completion Post

haha I can never remember who the bad guy is! And I don't like Susan Ericksen's narration at all :/ I feel like it's so hard to tell which character is talking. She doesn't modulate her voice enough for it to be obvious.

The Raven Boys

Rating: 2 starts
Review: OMG where was this story going??? At the halfway mark, I still couldn't tell what the plot was. It definitely felt like one of those books that was meant to be an intro to a series, without actually moving the story forward. I'll most definitely not be continuing on with the series.

Review: I HATED Hugh in the Kate Daniels series and thought no way can he be an MC that I could root for. I was wrong and I can't believe (Well I can because it's Ilona Andrews) that they were able to slowly make me feel bad and want a happy ending for Hugh. I really loved Elara as well and I so want to know "What is she." It was a slow build between those two and even at the end they still have a long way to go. Some loose ends wrapped up and some that I cant wait to find out more about. So looking forward to Hugh and Elara's next book.

One Night Expectations
Star Rating: 5
Review:
I enjoyed reading book #3, One Night Expectations by LaQuette, in the Deveraux Inc. series. Being a Devereaux and living up to the family’s expectations, real or imagined, is not an easy task. Amara Devereaux has always felt she lived in the shadow of her mother and never measure up to her mother in grandfather’s eyes. Real or imagined, this belief caused her to behave rashly, doing something that could potentially ruin not only her own professional life, an innocent baby, and the professional career of Lennox. What neither Amara nor Lennox expected was the domino affect their agreement to a “contractual” marriage would precipitate. A bitter scheming family member and blood thirsty paparazzi are just the tip of the iceberg, but once love inserted itself into their agreement, would they have the courage to set aside their pride, fear, and hurt to fight for their happiness? You will have to read the book to discover the answer.

I don't find that to be the case at all. I could drop into the middle of any In Death book and know who was in the scene - I find the characters to be quite distinct. And that is exactly why there are many authors and many narrators! (I personally have one, or maybe two, popular narrators that I avoid like the plague!)

Review: So this book was written in 2012 and you can tell. There are parts that just don't stand the test of time. It had some cute moments but it also had some really unbelievable moments. I also just didn't buy the "switch" for one of the MC's. It just happened so suddenly - one of the MC's goes from friends who basically say they could never be gay and they don't understand how any man can be attracted to another to "I want and love you" in a matter of days.

All the great feelings I had from figuring out the last book in the series disappeared reading this one! I had no clue what was going on - zero memory and I couldn't figure out any part of the conspiracies involved. I blame real life - that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
Anyway, as always I loved the story, the characters and the narration.

This is what I have - please let me know if I missed something!! I'm a little sleep deprived/jet lagged and preoccupied lately.

Book: A Fatal Grace
Author: Louise Penny
Page Count: 313 pages, paperback
Qualification: The book has three words in the title.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.25
Date Read: 11/27/24
Review: The Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series needs to be read in order because, yes, the murder that Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is in Three Pines to solve, but the series has a larger plot that is taking through the whole series. A Fatal Grace is a perfect book now that we are about to enter the holiday season.
The author, Louise Penny, manages with her writing to an enlightening and atmospheric mystery that explores the complexities of human relationships, the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and the darker secrets that lie beneath the surface of seemingly idyllic small-town life.
A Fatal Grace seems like a perfect match for readers who like to explore the mystery theme, albeit in a more atmospheric and character-driven way, set against the backdrop of Three Pines, a small Quebec village, with its intricate plot and clever detective work. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is a mix of Hercules Poirot and Sherlock Holmes, but he cares more; you can see it in his relationship with his wife and Jean-Guy, his deputy.
The first of the two books in the series is slow and grotesque, but as you continue with the series, it becomes more interesting. I consumed the book by listening to the audiobook while reading the physical book.

Let Me Hold You
Star Rating: 5
Review:
***Trigger Warning: this book deals with violence and profanity***
Let me hold you by Ms. Alexandria House is book 2 of the McCain Brothers series. This book was all that and then some! Ms. House delt with the difficult topic of domestic (verbal, emotional, physical, and phycological) abuse in a real, yet tasteful manner. The events in Kim Hampton’s life are heartbreaking. Often the victim is not protected and made to feel like they’re the problem. Kim’s mother was also a victim and her son’s anger problems, and control issues were direct results of living with domestic abuse. This is a vicious cycle that is hard, but not impossible to stop. As a survivor of domestic abuse, I want other victims to know that it is not your fault. You cannot change the abuser, and they will not stop. Please get help and save yourself and your children (if you have any).
On a lighter note, Mr. Leland McClain has been added to my short list of book-boyfriends.

Date Read: 11/27/24
Review: In Death series is one I started in another reading challenge, and I always read the e-book while I listen to the audiobook narrated by Susan Ericksen . She does the accents so well, and you can differentiate the characters based on the voices she acts. Seduction in Death is an installment in the series that shows you that even in the future, power and money are something that people can truly deal with and will do everything in their power to keep it. People don't care about close relatives or friends. They will do whatever that no one stands in their way. In the In Death series , there is one exception, and this is Roarke.
Once again, J.D. Robb takes us on a journey of gripping and suspenseful reading of futuristic romantic suspense, mystery, and detective fiction. Seduction in Death is a complex, electrifying story with a strong, intelligent female lead and a dash of romance. I like how, through this part of the series, we find out that Lut. Dallas and Roarke are about to celebrate their first anniversary. Even though each book in the series is about a different murder, you need to read the series for the linear relationship between Eve Dallas and Roarke and the secondary character that, with installments, I enjoy more and more.

Vanessa Jared's Got a Man
Star Rating: 5
Review:
Vanessa Jared’s Got a Man was not the lighthearted love story I expected. It was deep and touched on some serious matters like abuse, divorce, and loss. After a disastrous 20-year marriage, to an emotionally abusive womanizer, it was not surprising that Vanessa felt lost and broken. Rebuilding her tattered life was not easy, but she did. Now she’s faced with the possibility of a new relationship, but her new love interest, Michael, is giving her “controlling” vibes like her manipulative abusive ex-husband Carl. The difficult journey Vanessa embarked upon, to find herself and regain control of her life resonated with me. I absolutely enjoyed listening to this book.
