Week #7, Option #1

Date read: Nov 17
Rating: 4★
Review: It had been some time since I read the previous book in the series, but what I've always enjoyed about the series is the unpredictable mystery plot. The author does a great job keeping the villain hidden and me flipping pages because I really want to know! I liked the heroine. She was an ordinary woman caught in an awful situation, and I thought she was reasonable in trying to deal with the circumstances. The romance was pretty instalovey, but you know what, I didn't even mind because the couple had good communication, were supportive of each other, and faced their ordeal as a team. My favorite type of romance couple.

Review: What a sweet story. Abby has had her brothers for quite some time since her mom abandoned them but they’ve always had each until something happens that could have changed their lives for the good but scary at times for the worst.
Clayton stayed away from his family home because of a sad past but needed to come back home and things changed for both families. Such a great family bond.

Review: Five dragons!
Hayden has had a rough start but when she ends up in university and basically crashed into Knox then everything in her life changed. Some wild moments for sure for Hayden. Especially finding out some hidden information but still some aren't explained yet. Definitely will need to get started with the next book since I have cliffhangers. Lol

Review: This is an ARC and the book itself is being released next week. Set in Tasmania, Australia, the story centres around newly retired teacher, Vivian Malloy. During a weekend away at an awards night her musician husband deserts her saying he needs to find himself.
Vivian is distraught as she thought their marriage was good. She mopes for a few weeks until a friend asks her to run a writing course at the local library. The story then split into various subplots as the lives of four of the class participants are brought in and Vivian gradually realises she is still useful to other people. Everyone ends up with a much happier ending than they started with. Loved the story.

I'm being harsh in this rating just because it didn't hold up to the other books in the series. I didn't feel like there was enough mystery or really any. There was this whole crazy abduction/anarchy plot that felt like it came out of nowhere and was a little over the top. The whole book felt all over the place, so I was disappointed. I do like the characters which are really what kept the book going for me but the story itself was a miss.

Week #4, Option #2

Date read: Nov 22

Review: After an intriguing opening, the first half was slow and dull. Then the big twist happened and that's when it got really good. I've read one other book by this author, and tbh her writing style isn't my favorite. Everything is written rather dry and as-a-matter-of-fact. I still think it works well enough with the story. Not sure if I'll continue with the series, but I'm glad I read this one.

Review: This book was pretty cool (if a little grim at some points). Earth is basically turned into a live D&D game and Carl and his cat go into the dungeon to play this game. Mostly because he was outside, it was cold and it was the only place that was warm. And he is in his boxers and no shoes. He ends up fighting for his life in the dungeons. Carl yells at the cat every time she does something stupid and barely walks away from fights with monsters while leveling up his skills.
While there were some grim parts to the book, it was balanced out by points where I laughed out loud. I would totally read the next book.

Book:

Pages: 294
How it fits: Male MC, Sir Carlton Morley, is the Chief Inspector of Scotland Yard
Read: 25/11/24
Rating: 3★s
Review: Was an OK read - Morley is a chief inspector but he has a secret night time persona “The Shadow of Night” where he serves a different form of justice. He meets Prudence at an illegal brothel hiring a gentleman to deflower her before her scheduled marriage to a cad. He obliges, Prudence thinks he’s the man she’s hired, but there are consequences which reunite them later on. Can’t way I liked either character - but they worked for each other.
It’s fitted the brief, but I won’t read anymore in this series

Week #8, Option #1

Date read: Nov 28
Rating: 4★
Review: To be honest, I'm not sure what to say about this one. It was dark, disturbing, at times incredibly depressing and triggering, but I was completely hooked on the mystery. I've read one other book by the author and enjoyed it as well. I will definitely be reading more.

Week 8: Option 1

Review:
Kate was a bad a$$. It was like having a somewhat female Alex Cross. She doesn’t let anything stop her from getting her criminal. Mazor is a great cop but also a great dad. Kate and Mazor are a great team. When they work together and get the job done but also had some time in between to have a moment to be human.

Review: I'm not a fan of historical fiction but I enjoyed this story. It was one that had secrets in more than one MC since Daisy was undercover trying to find out if there is infidelity with the single Bishop and married women but she started to fall for the accused and yet she find some of things out with Bishop. Then there's things that Daisy didn't know about her own family. While Daisy did find out the truth she ended up being hired by Bishop to find out who murdered the husband of one of the ladies since he is being set up to take the fall and Daisy finds out more than she expected. I enjoyed the romance and the mystery in this book.

I typically make them when I have a ton of leftovers and almost everything goes in them, but this is a very good recipe. They're pretty easy, just takes a little time.

Buy the refrigerated pie crusts. Even when I bake pies from scratch, I still use the refrigerated dough.

I read this book initially four years ago and gave it three stars. The second time around, I had to drop the rating because it was a struggle to get through. The book was filled with so much despair and no hope that it was too depressing to enjoy. I understand that war isn't always hopeful, especially when in these situations, but it was a little too heavy. There wasn't enough of a balance. Jo's story was better written and developed than Kay's which was nothing but miserable conditions, harsh realities, violence, and death. Jo's story at least had interesting side characters and an actual story going on rather than just moaning and groaning that she wants to die. There was also something in the storytelling that left a lot to be desired. There was a lot of telling rather than showing, especially because there were a lot of flashbacks. Then there's a love story that felt completely unnecessary. Maybe that was an attempt at showing hope, but it came out of nowhere and felt a bit like an attempt to give the book a happy ending. Overall, the book was difficult to get invested in especially because it was a general downer in terms of mood and choppy storytelling.

Review: A fun paranormal romance with warring witch families, vampires and various shapechangers. Reluctant witch Nola flies from Ireland to Kentucky to find 4 artifacts that are needed to bind the magic of the evil Kennedy family. With the help of new vampire friends and her many time a great grandfather Nola faces danger as she puzzles out wherever the artifacts are, and who she can trust. There is a love interest but there is stuff that has to be over come there before any chance of a HEA.

I've never heard of congee, so I had to google that. It sounds similar to what my mother used to call porridge. I like creative leftovers for food. I hate to throw out food but I get bored eating the same thing over and over...

Book: Melting the Ice
Male MC is a hockey player.
Rating: 3 stars
Review: This was a good book in the way that I knew mostly how the book would go as soon as I started reading it. I think the part that fell flat for me this time was the fact that I've read so many by this author that it seemed just like all the others. I also kept rolling my eyes at the sex in the book. I think I would have liked a little more story and a little less sex. And I just couldn't get into the whole fashion career for the female MC even if I do love a hot hockey player.

Book: Happy Place
Rating: 5000 stars (yes, I know I'm only allowed to give it 5 stars, but I do what I want)
Review: This book completely wrecked me. Don't read this book if you don't feel like crying at least a little.
It's about a group of friends that started with just the 3 girls, Cleo, Harriet (Harry), and Sabrina which eventually grew to a group of six. The story goes back and forth in time between Harry's happy place and present day. We learn pretty early on that Harry and Wyn were engaged, but we don't hear the whole story at that time. We see bits and pieces throughout time of what was happening. While a lot of the book is on the relationship between Wyn and Harry, it's also about the relationships between the 3 women and how they have change since they have gotten older. It was wonderfully written and I didn't want to put it down most days.

Bookcover/link: The Last Close Call

Date Finished: 12/4
Rating (1-5): ⭐⭐1/2
This wasn't satisfying enough for the average three stars. Jack has been hunting a serial rapist who has now killed his latest victim and enlists the help of Rowan who works with genealogy. The book tries to be this serious mystery, but it was underdeveloped. Character development was a bit lacking and the romance had no real spark. At times the book felt choppy, like when it switched focus from mystery to romance. The book was just a bit lacking.

Outstanding completions:
Week 6 - Mary-Megan
Week 9 - Carmen & Lena

Review: I so enjoy shifters but I think bears are my favorite since it just reminds me of something cuddly. Alex was just that big, grumpy but lovable bear shifter. Tabby the strong female was just the perfect one for Alex but… I need to get to the next book so I can get more. Lol
