Review: Tristan has been Nina's enemy since they were teenagers and her brother first brought him home. At first Nina had a huge crush on him, but after he makes a joke at her expense and crushed her little teenage heart, they have been enemies. Fast forward to adulthood and they are still enemies, but he's her brothers best friend and she rarely has to see him, but that changes when circumstances trap them in the same house for the holidays due to a snow storm. A battle of wits ensues until something finally breaks and instead of fighting they are falling.

Review: I enjoyed this series a lot but this wasn't my favorite book of it. It was ok. Jackson's past was very glossed over and Finn had practically no background at all (other than he owns a BDSM club and is a retired Marine.) Jackson's team didn't have an active case and even though there was a bit of a mystery on who and why someone is stalking Finn it was not fleshed out enough and concluded super fast. Also, there were the typical editing issues that Steller seems to have in every book she publishes which is a darn shame because her stories are really good. I will continue to read her and be a fan despite my feelings for this book. She really does pen great stories.

Week #11

Week #11
Book: Gone with the Wind
Read: 12/17/24
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Review: Gone with the Wind is a timeless epic set against the backdrop of the American Civil War and Reconstruction Era. The story follows Scarlett O'Hara, who is a headstrong but resilient Southern belle, whose life is upended by the war and its aftermath. The story is not only a sweeping romance but also a vivid portrayal of the transformation of the South. I much prefer the book to the movie. Whether you were team Rhett or Ashley this made you feel something. And if, like me, you are African American, reading its romanticized view of the Old South and its problematic portrayal of race and slavery can evoke a range of emotions, from frustration and anger to sadness and a sense of injustice. The book's depiction of these themes, through the lens of its time, can be a stark reminder of the historical realities and the ongoing impact of those times on today's society. It's essential to approach the novel with a critical eye, acknowledging both its literary significance and its deeply flawed perspectives.

Review: I was a bit hesitant to pick this up because I love love love the Nothing Special series and I wasn't sure it's this would compare. Also there are a lot of reviews that said they didn't like it as well. I didn't read but a few lines of my GR friends' reviews (to avoid spoilers) but that was the consensus.
Anyway, yes I wasn't wowed by this book like I was the first book in the Nothing Special series but then nothing trips my fangirl buttons like a tortured back story and Cash's is tied for my #1 spot. There are no real tragic pasts and no true tortured heroes here (even though Wick never knew love as a kid). So I really just had to view this book on its own merit (which I'm pretty sure we all should be doing anyway but we bookie people tend to be judgie people.)
I ended up loving Wick (especially after his shift). I really enjoyed watching Justice and Wick rule as a couple. The two challenge scenes were great action. What I didn't like was the second secondary plot about the hidden secret labs. This will become more of a plot in future books, I'm sure, but in this one it's mentioned and then quickly taken care of off page. I would have rather something pop up at the end of the book where they realize some evil humans are kidnapping vampires and shifters to experiment on them which would then make me jump drought into the 2nd book. Oh well, I still really liked this book anyway but didn't love it. I will read yeah next book someday.
