I was about 9 or 10, and I found out that the stationary close to where I lived in Milan had it, and it was "Le tigri di Mompracem" by Emilio Salgari. I don't remember why but I coveted it. I think it cost 800 liras, and I think it's the very first book with which the saga of Sandokan and the Malaysian Pirates begins. I bought it all on my own and I was proud and ashamed and terrified.
I obviously loved it and read it many times and knew whole long sentences of it by heart!
Wow.
It was November and cold and it was 1973 or 1974.

However, now as an adult it was Small great things by Jodi Picoult
