Drace (dracenines) | 7525 comments The novel Blindsight by Peter Watts has cleanup that needs to be done.

1. All Editions: https://www.goodreads.com/work/editio...

- The original publication date is incomplete. It should be October 3, 2006.

===

2. Hardcover Edition: Blindsight (ISBN 9780765312181)

- The description is close to being correct, but it doesn’t match the description from the book. Transcribed directly from the jacket:
Two months since the stars fell...

Two months since sixty-five thousand alien objects clenched around the Earth like a luminous fist, screaming to the heavens as the atmosphere burned them to ash. Two months since that moment of brief, bright surveillance by agents unknown.

Two months of silence while a world holds its breath.

Now some half-derelict space probe, sparking fitfully past Neptune’s orbit, hears a whisper from the edge of the solar system: a faint signal sweeping the cosmos like a lighthouse beam. Whatever’s out there isn’t talking to us. It’s talking to some distant star, perhaps. Or perhaps to something closer, something en route.

So who do you send to force introductions on an intelligence with motives unknown, maybe unknowable? Who do you send to meet the alien when the alien doesn’t want to meet?

You send a linguist with multiple personalities, her brain surgically partitioned into separate, sentient processing cores. You send a biologist so radically interfaced with machinery that he sees X-rays and tastes ultrasound, so compromised by grafts and splices he no longer feels his own flesh. You send a pacifist warrior in the faint hope she won’t be needed, and a fainter hope she’ll do any good if she is needed. You send a monster to command them all, an extinct hominid predator once called “vampire,” recalled from the grave with the voodoo of recombinant genetics and the blood of sociopaths. And you send a synthesist – an informational topologist with half his mind gone – as an interface between here and there, a conduit through which the Dead Center might hope to understand the Bleeding Edge.

You send them all to the edge of interstellar space, praying you can trust such freaks and retrofits with the fate of a world. You fear they may be more alien than the thing they’ve been sent to find.

But you’d give anything for that to be true, if you only knew what was waiting for them…

3. Newest Kindle ACE: Blindsight (ASIN B003K15EKM)

- Elizabeth Bear needs to be added with the Introduction role.

- The description is incomplete. It should read as follows:
Hugo and Shirley Jackson award-winning Peter Watts stands on the cutting edge of hard SF with his acclaimed novel, Blindsight

Two months since the stars fell...

Two months of silence, while a world held its breath.

Now some half-derelict space probe, sparking fitfully past Neptune's orbit, hears a whisper from the edge of the solar system: a faint signal sweeping the cosmos like a lighthouse beam. Whatever's out there isn't talking to us. It's talking to some distant star, perhaps. Or perhaps to something closer, something en route.

So who do you send to force introductions with unknown and unknowable alien intellect that doesn't wish to be met?

You send a linguist with multiple personalities, her brain surgically partitioned into separate, sentient processing cores. You send a biologist so radically interfaced with machinery that he sees x-rays and tastes ultrasound. You send a pacifist warrior in the faint hope she won't be needed. You send a monster to command them all, an extinct hominid predator once called vampire, recalled from the grave with the voodoo of recombinant genetics and the blood of sociopaths. And you send a synthesist—an informational topologist with half his mind gone—as an interface between here and there.

Pray they can be trusted with the fate of a world. They may be more alien than the thing they've been sent to find.

4. First Edition Paperback: Blindsight (ISBN 9780765319647)

- The description is incomplete and missing paragraph breaks. It should read as follows, transcribed from the back of the book:
A science fiction novel of burning, dark intensity.

Two months since the stars fell.

Two months since sixty-five thousand alien objects clenched around Earth like a luminous fist, screaming to the heavens as the atmosphere burned them to ash. Two months since that moment of brief, bright surveillance by agents unknown.

Two months of silence while a world holds its breath.

Now some half-derelict space probe hears a whisper from the edge of the solar system: a faint signal sweeping the cosmos like a lighthouse beam. Whatever’s out there isn’t talking to us. It’s talking to some distant star, perhaps. Or perhaps to something closer.

5. Current Paperback Edition: Blindsight (ISBN 9781250237484)

- Elizabeth Bear needs to be added with the Introduction role.

- The description is incorrect. It should read as follows, transcribed from the back of the book:
Two months since the stars fell.

Two months ago, innumerable alien objects surrounded Earth, screaming as they burned their way into our atmosphere. The heavens have been silent since. Now, though, a derelict space probe has heard whispers from a distant comet. Something talks out there – but not to us.

Who should be sent to find out?

Send a linguist with multiple personality disorder, and a cyborg biologist who can’t feel his own flesh. Send a pacifist warrior, and a vampire resurrected by the voodoo of paleogenetics. Send a man missing half his mind since childhood. And pray they can be trusted with the fate of a world. Because they may be more alien than the thing they’ve been sent to find.

A finalist for the Hugo Award on its first publication, Blindsight’s reputation has only increased in the ensuing years. It is one of the great modern examinations of just how alien truly alien life might actually be.

6. Previous Ebook Edition: Blindsight (ISBN 9781429955195)

- This is mistakenly labeled as a Kindle edition. It’s an ebook.

It looks like the #7 and #9 ACEs were created, the only issues are the publication dates are wrong and #7 is missing its cover art.
