Welcome to the Fall 2024 Challenge! Dig out your comfy sweaters and grab your pumpkin spice lattes, it's time to curl up with some cosy reads for the season - or spooky ones, if you're feeling the Hallowe'en vibe!

Welcome back returning players! Thank you for making this group so much fun. If you are just joining us as a new player, we are glad you are here.

If you need help getting started please see Getting Started, SRC Explained, and Welcome Newcomers.

The Fall 2024 bonus theme is: It's All Fun and Games - Board Games

The predicted task breakdown is as follows, but may be subject to change:

There are 59 tasks.
The Challenge point total is 1045.

10 x 5 points = 50
10 x 10 points = 100
10 x 15 points = 150
10 x 20 points = 200
9 x 25 points = 225
9 x 30 points = 270
1 x 50 points = 50

Many of the tasks have already been posted. The remaining tasks will be posted as they are available. All tasks are draft until 5 days after the last task is posted. Please carefully review the task descriptions after the task become final as task requirements may have changed during the review period. Task 50.1 will be posted around the season midpoint on October 15.

Please read the task descriptions thoroughly!

We strongly recommend that you review the Rules of the Challenge, Posting Requirements and Default Rules and FAQs.

The Fall Challenge Folder holds or will soon hold: Challenge Tasks, Completed Tasks, the Readerboard, Questions/Problems, the current Challenge Rules, the season's Group Reads discussion threads, Task Ideas, the Calendar and submission threads for the season's Logo Contest and Review Raffle.
The topics can be sorted by clicking on the topics heading.

The Fall 2024 challenge will end at midnight (24:00) on November 30, 2024.

Many thanks to TrishhartUK for our group icon and masthead banner this season.

We hope this season's tasks lead you to some great books. Happy reading!

You're absolutely right. Fixed it now.

Apparently I need to go and brush up my maths...

I admit to having to use a calculator to check my mental arithmetic
but don't worry you are juggling a lot of things just now

Jenny | 208 comments This is going to be insane! 1045 points!?!?! Now that I think about it though, I have a vague memory of a challenge that was more than 1100 points.

This year's summer challenge I tried to really push myself to complete the whole challenge but didn't make it quite the distance. With the fall challenge I'm happy if I manage to get over 300 points. I'm starting a new job in a few weeks and I'm expecting it to be HECTIC. Good luck to everyone!

The Spring challenge this year was something like 1085 points. Like you, I've got a vague memory of some really high scoring challenges from earlier years, but I couldn't tell you when it was.

I've been playing since 2011 or some such and to this day I've never managed more than 350 points... and that was when I wasn't modding! I have no idea how JennRenee can finish the whole thing while juggling the Readerboard and the rest of it.

Hahaha my memory sure is short! I had completely forgotten that the spring challenge was quite hefty too...

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3946 comments i feel sure there was a challenge around 1300 points one year

1270 was the highest one I could find in my time doing the challenge.

I was also surprised by how long I have been doing this - since 2016

Very similar for me! This Fall marks my 7th anniversary of participating in the SRC, and my record is 335 points, last Spring. I am not a terribly fast reader, so I don't ever see a win in the cards for me, but that's OK!

1350 in summer 2013. That's the highest since I started in 2012. There seem to be more 1000+ in the earlier years.

Denise I'm new here...do I have to do the tasks in order or can I go straight for the big points? No way I can complete 59 tasks, I'll be in a good place if I get 20

Any order.

You can complete tasks in any order you like. I know I tend to chase after the ones with hefty points rewards first!

Thank you. That's the approach I will take since its allowed

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3946 comments I know you all had a very busy end to the summer season but I was wondering if the remaining tasks are still coming or maybe people didn't choose to set a task. Sorry to be a nuisance

Remaining tasks are still to come - there's one or two that are just undergoing final checks before being posted. We had a couple of non-responses too, so have had to move down the line to the next eligible candidate for that category.

Robin P | 1687 comments I originally joined this group because I knew I wouldn't finish everything, so no pressure. After a couple of years, to my surprise, I finished one that was a bit lower and I got hooked. I have finished a few but the highest I have ever gotten is 950 and that was during Covid when I wasn't going anywhere. I didn't finish the spring 2024 one and I doubt I will finish this one. I would never be able to get close if it wasn't that I am retired. I am amazed by those who are working, going to school, or raising kids and still reading so much!

Right, a quick update: I can now confirm that there is a 20.5 task in the works and that it should be available before too long. All other tasks (with the exception of 50.1) are already posted.

EDIT: All starting tasks are now posted and will become final on September 18th.

That one might have slipped through the net, we're still getting used to the new format! It's posted now.
