Rachel | 3524 comments Please post all questions/updates/comments on the Fall Challenge in this thread.

The Fall Reading Challenge will begin September 1st and end November 30th.

Rules of the challenge:

Read 3 books (or more)
Complete 3 prompts (or more)
All genres ok
Rereads ok

This Fall, complete 3 (or more) of the following:

1. Many talented authors have birthdays in the fall.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK BY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

Han Kang
Alma Katsu
Wally Lamb
H.G. Wells
Chris Whitaker

2. The Perfect Couple is a limited tv series that will premiere on Netflix in September. A woman is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket, until a shocking death derails the wedding and turns everyone into a suspect. It’s based on the book by Elin Hilderbrand. Nicole Kidman stars.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK WITH THE WORD “PERFECT” IN THE TITLE/SUBTITLE.

OR

READ ANYTHING BY ELIN HILDERBRAND.

OR

READ ANY BOOK MADE INTO A FILM STARRING NICOLE KIDMAN.

3. My Old Ass will premier in theaters on September 13th. An 18th birthday mushroom trip brings free spirited Elliot face to face with her wise cracking 39 year old self. Her “old ass”has some advice for her younger self.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK WITH A MIDDLE AGED MAIN CHARACTER.

OR

READ A BOOK WITH A MUSHROOM ON THE COVER.

OR

READ A BOOK IN WHICH MUSHROOMS AND/OR A MIND ALTERING SUBSTANCE IS PART OF THE STORY.

4. International Sloth Day is October 20th.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK WITH THE LETTERS S-L-O-T-H
IN THE TITLE/SUBTITLE.

5. The Booker Prize awards the best English language fiction published in the UK and/or Ireland. The winner will be announced in November.

So this fall,

READ ANY BOOK THAT HAS BEEN NOMINATED FOR A BOOKER (ANY YEAR).

6. Some authors we have read and enjoyed in the past have books coming out in the fall.

So this fall,

READ ONE (OR MORE) OF THE FOLLOWING AND DISCUSS WITH THE GROUP:

Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty-September 10th.

The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich-October 1st.

Bonus Group Read:

Moonbound by Robin Sloan-Available now.

7. Random-This counts towards the challenge but isn’t inspired by the season.

So this fall,

I CHOOSE YOUR BOOK FROM YOUR BOOKSHELVES.

I will look at your shelves and post 5 titles and then you choose which one to read.

HAPPY AUTUMN, EVERYONE! :D

Danell (danellbookworm) | 685 comments I’m excited and loving this challenge, you did it again Rachel!!!
I’m going to age myself, but when I grew up I would get excited to circle everything I wanted in the Sears or JC Penny Christmas catalog, that’s how I feel when the new challenges come out. I have a notebook and write down each challenge and then go through my physical books and ebooks and the Libby app and find which ones I want to read and make a stack.
Happy reading!!!

So glad you like it Danell! :D
Catalogs were great. Reminds me of my younger days. Shopping online isn’t the same.

Let me know if you want to do the random and I’ll post your 5 titles in this thread.

Happy Reading! :D

Thank you! I also look forward to these reading challenges, they have expanded my scope of reading.
I'll look over this and select some books next week. Maybe even Monday since I have Labor Day off.

Are the 5 coming specifically from the Want to Read shelves? I use quite a number of bookshelf tags for books I've read.

That’s what I was planning unless you want me to focus on a different shelf.

Danell (danellbookworm) | 685 comments I had Defending Jacob in my stack of books for the summer challenge the read a book you’ve been meaning to read. A Monster Calls is another one I was going to read for a past challenge also.
Awesome choices!! Thank you!!

I highly recommend The Invisible Life of Addie Larue. I'm actually planning to re-read that book soon.

message 12: by Danell (new)

Danell (danellbookworm) | 685 comments Thank you Dustin! I’ve been eyeing that book the past few years and have yet to read it. Think I’ll add that also! I have 15 physical books stacked on my coffee table and 3 ebooks that will work for this challenge. Now to hopefully finish the books I’m currently reading and my book club selection then I’ll start chipping away. I love this group and my wonderful book family!!!

Question about task #4, S-L-O-T-H
Does the word THE count? Because if so, this is super easy and I'll be reading 5+ titles just on this one task.
Thanks.

Dustin the wind Crazy little brown owl (dustpancrazy) | 2897 comments Mod
Okay, I will try the Random Task. I have over 1100 To-Read books added since 2009. I've noticed a few of them I have read a different edition, maybe I accidently added the e-book to read and I don't do e-books, but might have read the printed version. Anyway, go ahead and let's see :-) Good Luck!

Thanks Rachel, I haven't read any of those five. I'll look at them and post back here.
I am currently reading Brooklyn by Colm Toibin, with an Irish setting this book was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize (task #5). I will be rewatching the film soon.

I will probably watch the film after I read the book. I've enjoyed most of the Cormac McCarthy books I've read, so I hope I'll like No Country for Old Men.

I am also considering Blood Meridian, or, the Evening Redness in the West. I've been wanting to read that McCarthy title for some time and with the wordy subtitle, it works for S-L-O-T-H.

Christine | 798 comments Hey Everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve been able to join you all. My husband’s health is stable so I have more time for the things I enjoy. My reading life has really suffered. I want to join the fall challenge but I can’t find where I enter my goal and the challenge name on the iPad version of GR. Can anyone give me some help? I know it’s real simple but brain is fried after the last few months. Thank you.

Great to see you post Christine! Glad your husband’s health remains stable from when we spoke last. I was worried when I didn’t see you on gr this month.

So happy you’re able to join us in the challenge. You have been missed! :D

Did you try clicking on the title of the challenge-(fall 2024 reading challenge)-it should take you to the page and let you create a shelf. I use an iPad too. Let me know if it works. :)
