Team Challenge
September 2024 - November 2024

Please take some time and choose a team name. You will also need to choose which clown you want to catch first. Choose wisely because some clown require more than others. As such, those clowns will net more points. Let me know when you have made your choices.

Team
Christine
Carrie
Shaw

Rules
⛓️Each clown has specific chains and/or tasks that need to be completed.
Examples:
1. Create a chain of 3 using titles consecutively (ABC)
-All the Light We Cannot See
-Becoming Mrs. Lewis
-Catching Fire
2. Create a chain of 3 with "dog" in the titles
-Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike
-The Dog Stars
-Hot Dog Girl

⛓️One person should NOT complete a whole chain by themselves. This is a team challenge. However, if a clown has multiple chains and a slower reader can only/want to only read for 1 or 2 chains (they must read at least one), then the other two faster readers on the team can complete the other chains between the two of them.
⛓️You may choose which clown from the list to capture first but you MUST complete it BEFORE starting a new clown.
⛓️You may use or drop articles: A, An, The
⛓️If you somehow manage to incorporate a Buddy Read into a chain, you can earn points based on the BR tier system. description
⛓️Standard Rules Apply
⛓️At the end of the official challenge (last day of November), your team may choose to continue on at your own pace. There will be no points accumulated after November but you can finish any clowns that you didn't get to during the challenge.

Scoring
You will get 3 points for every completed book (9 per completed chain) PLUS page points.

Submit your team name & first clown choice in the check-in thread.

message 4: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments Hey everyone! Just checking in and excited to be rounding up some clowns this go around.

So team names that I can think of:
Harlequin Hunters
Mime Massacre
Facepaint Force

I figured most teams will go with clown terms so I was trying to think of other terms.

message 5: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments Hey there! Just saw teams were posted!

Checking in now - I guess we need to decide which clown we are going after first as well as deciding the team name!

message 6: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments I like Facepaint Force as a team name.

Also, I'm thinking Tickles or Shivers to start?

message 7: by Upton (last edited Aug 31, 2024 08:03PM) (new)

Upton | 916 comments Hi - Sorry for the slow check-in, of course the 2 days I don't look at the thread and teams get posted :) I feel like I have been waiting forever for this one to start.

I am cool with Face Paint Force. I am good with any of the 3 names, they are all creative. Nice job Shaw! I did see a team went with Harlequin Heroines, so we will probably want to avoid Harlequin Hunters.

I am good with any clown to start. Most are starting at the top. I wouldn't mind doing something different. We can rotate picking if we want. The challenge starts soon, so I am good with Carrie picking a clown if that works for the 2 of you.

I will watch for responses tonight, so we don't miss out on the start.

message 8: by Upton (new)

Upton | 916 comments I'm not sure what time zone this challenge kicks off in. I am in CST at it is 23.36 here. I figure I will wait about 10 mins and then I will set our name as Facepaint Force as I am guessing that is where we would land on a name.

And Carrie suggested Shivers or Tickles. I guess between those two, I would pick Shivers. Sounds scarier to me, for whatever reason.

message 9: by Upton (new)

Upton | 916 comments Ok. I am going to post for Facepaint Force and Shivers! I hope that is okay. I'm excited to start.

message 10: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments Shivers and team Facepaint Force works for me. Do we want to just rotate on who it is that picks the next clown when we complete one?

message 11: by Upton (new)

Upton | 916 comments That works!

Shivers
description
Shivers is a sadistic, twisted, and relentless killer. His costume is grim and tattered making him look demonic. His wild messy hair, bloodshot eyes, and twisted smile create a chilling look that emphasizes his malevolence. He relies on his menacing presence and brutal violence to terrorize his victims. He is very straightforward in his evil. He is obsessed with causing pain to those who fear him. He stalks people afraid of clowns and uses their fears against them. It is their fear which attracts him.

Complete the following tasks
Arm 1: Read a chain of 3 books with a character that has messy hair (your interpretation)
Arm 2: Read a chain of 3 books with a stalker
Leg 1: Read a chain of 3 books with the author's initials in FEAR
Leg 2: Read a chain of 3 books that starts with a letter in DEMONIC (team must pick one letter)

message 14: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments Thanks Donna!

message 15: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments Rotating works for me. Our clown is super creepy!! Let the reading begin 🤡

message 16: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments What letter do we want to pick for demonic?

message 17: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments The authors initials in FEAR is going to require a look for me! That may be a tough one…

message 18: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments I can't think of any books that I have with a messy hair character but I can find one if needed. I think I have at least one book with a stalker and I vote for using the E, O, N or I in Demonic.

message 19: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments Carrie wrote: "The authors initials in FEAR is going to require a look for me! That may be a tough one…"

I got two books for FEAR author initials if you've got some with messy hair.

message 20: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments The two messy hair characters that come to mind are Harry Dresden from Jim Butcher books and Hermione from Harry Potter. I’ll do a search to see if I can find more.

message 21: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments We can just keep it with one book for each of us for each task then. Either way is fine with me.

message 22: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments How fast does everyone read? That may come into play if we have someone reading multiple books for a task as well.

I'm good with any of those letters Shaw. I have something that works for them all on my shelves or my kindle.

message 23: by Upton (new)

Upton | 916 comments I am also good with whatever letter you would like to use.

Reading wise, I try and keep pace with the people I am playing with. Maybe a book every day or two, but I can focus when needed. I know we are on a competitive team, so I am willing to push it as much as needed.

I do have 3 stupid fantasy football drafts this week, so that will slow me down a small amount. I try and get out of those things as quickly as possible.

I am also willing to swap tasks or double up if it helps. I don't think I have done a buddy read during a challenge before, but I am willing if we want to try for extra points. I will read almost any genre. Romance is not my favorite, but I am willing to read whatever is needed.

message 24: by Upton (new)

Upton | 916 comments Rock Paper Scissors Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney has a character with "messy, boyish, blonde hair..." if that helps. That is the book I am using. It was available on Scribd if either of you use that app.

message 25: by Shaw (last edited Sep 02, 2024 04:25AM) (new)

Shaw | 681 comments I usually finish my audiobooks within a couple of days unless they are really long. I can read most of the time except if things get busy at work then I might be a little slower. I will also help push for the competition if needed.

I say we do the letter O then so a book I’m reading will count!

message 26: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments And so for this round we just want to do the one book per person version? Cuz I’m good with that-I can find a book n with messy hair- I’ll check out Rock Paper Scissors.

message 27: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments O works for me. One book per task also sounds good to me!

message 28: by Upton (new)

Upton | 916 comments Works for me as well!

message 29: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments Ugh-the book I had for stalker didn’t really have a stalker so much. So I removed it from the spreadsheet and I’ll find another one tonight. I will be done with my author F-E-A-R book tonight or tomorrow morning so it shouldn’t be too much of a delay.

I haven't done a buddy read before at all but I am good with doing one for the extra points. If I understand it correctly if we do the Formal Buddy Read that is the one with the most points in the tier? I have read Ninth House but I would be ok reading the Serpent and the Wings of Night and try to fit it in for one of our next clowns.

message 32: by Upton (new)

Upton | 916 comments I don't think I have done a BR before. Maybe an informal one. I could read the Ninth House. I just added my final book for this clown.
Is everyone doing okay? I could read a second book for a task if needed. No rush though! Take your time. I am only offering to help if needed,

message 33: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments I’m just about finished with my O book. I haven’t started a stalker book yet though so if you want to take that, you could. If not, I can hopefully find something for it tomorrow.

That's cool - we can wait and see for October. Or if we find a mutual book for one of the clowns then we can sign up for the informal read.

I also have a couple of books that would probably work for stalker so let me know if you want me to cover it instead if you don't have anything.

message 36: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments I have my third book finished and will post it once I get to my computer. It’ll probably take me 3 days to get the stalker one finished. If one of you want to read to finish it faster let me know. I’m good either way. I just hate slowing the team down!

message 37: by Upton (new)

Upton | 916 comments The book I thought I had to use didn't apply. With all the true crime I read, I can't believe it is this hard to find books with a stalker. The one I am reading now might apply, but I'm not sure yet. If I confirm it will work, I will let you know. Feel free to post a book if either of you get there first.

Don't worry about slowing us down. We will all be in the same position sooner or later :)

message 38: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments I know, right? I have true crime and detective novels stacked to the ceiling and the stalker is still elusive. I also have one that might work so I’ll also advise if it does-I plan to finish it today or tomorrow latest.

message 39: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments I maybe found one but I'm not sure it's something I really want to read. I'm going to scour my shelves a bit more.

message 40: by Upton (new)

Upton | 916 comments Heck, throw the names at me. I might have it or be able to get it. I'm willing to read it, I just can't fine it. I suspect Shaw is going to beat us to it either way.

message 41: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments I am finishing up The Perfume of the Lady in Black (Joseph Rouletabille #2) by Gaston Leroux and it has the lady's supposedly dead ex husband following her. So i think that counts as a stalker, right?

message 42: by Carrie (last edited Sep 16, 2024 01:27PM) (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1141 comments I saw that Penpal is listed as a stalker book. It’s short but the TW are not great.
Also looking at Follow Me or Valentine by Tom Savage.

Sounds like a stalker to me.

I agree. That actually sounds worse than a normal stalker. He could pop up anywhere any time.

I was looking for PenPal. I either did not find it or it wasn't available.

Joker
description
The Joker is a supervillain clown with green hair, white skin, and red lips. He has no superhuman abilities. Instead, he uses his expertise in chemical engineering to develop poisonous or lethal concoctions and thematic weapons. Sometimes he works with other supervillains but these collaborations usually collapse due to his desire for chaos.

Complete the following tasks
Arm 1: Read a chain of 3 books with Red, White & Green covers (no other colors allowed - except for text)
Arm 2: Read a chain of 3 books with weapons on the cover
Leg 1: Read a chain of 3 books with the word POISON in the text
Leg 2: Read a chain of 3 books with the authors initials in JOKER

Donna (dkflynn33) | 7441 comments Mod
I made a recent ruling on one of these tasks in the Q&A so you may want to take a look in the Q&A

message 50: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments Oh thank goodness- I read that as all only all three colors. A combo of the three is much better.
