Book about a man with no name stranded on an island. Read around 2007, published in 1950s/1960s?

I read this book in around 2007 and it seemed like a book probably from the 50s or 60s. The main character was just called man the whole time and was stranded on an island. He meets a mermaid (who also is never given a name) and teaches her English. They wind up adopting and raising a boy who also winds up stranded on the island and is also never named.
