So true, Bri! I've changed my vote about three times already - probably a record 😆

Less than 24 hours to go and, at the time of writing, The Shooting Party continues to narrowly top the poll

We have a winner....

The Shooting Party (1980)

by

Isabel Colegate

Thanks to everyone who got involved 👏🏼

It is 1913 - just prior to England's entry into World War I - and Edwardian England is about to vanish into history. A group of men and women gather at Sir Randolph Nettleby's estate for a shooting party. Opulent, adulterous, moving assuredly through the rituals of eating and slaughter, they are a dazzlingly obtuse and brilliantly decorative finale of an era.

Hester (inspiredbygrass) | 580 comments I'd be up for a buddy read of both To the Lighthouse and Therese if anyone else likes the idea

message 59: by Blaine (new)

Blaine | 2197 comments I’m up for both

I've given up trying with Woolf, and not sure I can fit Therese in, but will follow the buddy with interest

So do you both want to go ahead with those two buddy reads?

Both in October?

Or another month?

Name it and claim it

I'm sure there will be other takers

message 62: by Blaine (new)

Blaine | 2197 comments I prefer 1 in October and 1 in November, as I'm in the USA in October so I will be busy, but I read To the Lighthouse last year so can probably skim. It's one of my favorites.

Blaine | 2197 comments And September is my Agatha Christie month!

I'm in for Therese - and I'm trying to resist Lighthouse but if people are reading it I won't be able to hold back! Not one to skim, though, Ben 🧐

SueLucie | 250 comments I’d like to read To the Lighthouse with you and October is good for me. I’ll do my best not to do any skimming.

message 72: by Brian E (new)

Brian E Reynolds | 1144 comments Having faith that RC would stick with vote, I ordered The Shooting Party the other day. Blind Faith.

I've had this used copy of Vipers' Tangle since the last century and have never gotten around to reading it.
Vipers' Tangle (A Doubleday Image Book, D51) by François Mauriac I finally know why. I was destined to instead read Thérèse Desqueyroux by François Mauriac as my first novel by François Mauriac. I'm in for November's buddy read.

Yep, stuck with my *third* vote! I guess I felt Shooting Party would make the most interesting group read.

Not joining us for To the Lighthouse, Brian? 🥺

Ahh, but I've read it already, so it's icing on a very, very yummy cake!

Haha, it is a gorgeous, wonderful, thrilling book, indeed, Ben!

Brian E Reynolds | 1144 comments Roman Clodia wrote: "Not joining us for To the Lighthouse, Brian?.."

No, but unlike with Mrs. Dalloway, I did connect with To the Lighthouse and I rated it 4 stars. I gave Mrs. D 2 stars. But that was 20 years ago.

And while I may re-read it someday, it will definitely not be during the remainder of 2024 where I will be finishing Proust's In Search of Lost Time and Faulkner's Snopes Trilogy: The Hamlet, The Town, and The Mansion.

Today I read 26 pages of Proust and 55 pages of Faulkner and the thought of having some Woolf as "icing" on my Proust/Faulkner cake makes my stomach churn. I prefer using Wodehouse, Fremlin, Highsmith, Poirots and Cadfaels as my icing - icing that's light like buttercream, fluffy like whipped cream or frothy like meringue rather than dense like fondant. So no Woolf. Highsmith's Found in the Street is my icing de jour.

message 77: by Blaine (new)

Blaine | 2197 comments I agree, Brian. A scattering of skimmed Woolf words could be icing only on a Woolf cake.

message 78: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 1663 comments I'll see about getting started on Woolf. Maybe it won't be quite as much of a drag as Mrs. Dalloway. I see we're starting it on my brother's birthday - so maybe I'll remember it. It's also United Nations Day!

Jan, we're doing a buddy read of To the Lighthouse in October, but you may not want to wait till then.

Starting now doesn't necessarily mean I would be finished by October. I recall Mrs. Dalloway taking a long time for me, despite its slimness.
