TEAM Caught Read-Handed: I Spy

Also this is just provisional! If you decide not read a book you've put on the sheet ..."
Thanks for starting the plan, Mansi. I added to it. 😊

Looks like we're really on track!! I'm hoping to read one more book but haven't added it because I'm not sure I'll get round to it but if I do, I'll look for a book that matches the remaining prompts

I´ll start with a late but quick introduction:
I´m Alina, based in germany. I joined this group late last year and am mostly enjoying the Twin - Reads as I can finally discuss the books I read with someone. My friends from home and I are not really reading the same books so it´s nice to chat here. I always enjoyed reading - however during uni I had to read so many books that I couldn´t get myself to read any more just for myself. I finished my degree last year and since then I started reading again!
I´m really excited for this readathon and will put my books into our planning sheet just after I am finished with this comment!
Thanks for planning everything! I love our team-name and am impressed how well everything is turning out so far.
I´m off of work until 5th August - that´s why I only signed up for 2 to 3 books as I will have quite alot of work to do when I´m back at my job as my coworkers are going on their summer break then.

Nice thank you! Hope you enjoyed your trip, nice to meet you! We're at 52 books now so we might even be able to get all the prompts!
I just tidied the sheet, and google seems to suggest the woods are a biome so I added that too but I see you have a question mark next to the last book? I think the prompts only refer to things on the cover and title rather than what's in the book but somebody please correct me if I'm wrong!!
Edit: Goodreads makes me realise just how many explanation marks I use 😳

Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful trip, Alina.
Mansi is correct about how I Spy works. It's only cover art and titles for this one, so it won't matter what's between the covers.
I don't know if you've had time to read back through all our messages, but Lina reminded us that if you've started a book before the start date, then finish the last 100+ pages after midnight in your time zone, you can count it for a prompt. However, only the pages read during the readathon will count for page points.
I'm getting so excited!

Alina, The Reappearance of Rachel Price doesn't fit the family member prompt since the family member title (mother, aunt, etc.) isn't in the title or cover.
I have two ideas:
1. Count this one for the color blue, then we shuffle others to cover Fruits and Veggies.
2. If you have it ready, you could switch to A Murder of Crows from your TBR (also a little shorter), which would fit Crime, Animal, or Things in the Sky. Then we shuffle others to cover Fruits and Veggies.
What do you think?

So I just had another look into our sheet and corrected the prompts as I did put some in that were just in the plot of the book but not in the cover art or title.
i don´t have A Murder of Crows as I handed it to a friend. Also the books on my TBR shelve are mostly my physical books I have at home.
I also had look into my "want-to-buy" shelve and put in some books that fit a few more prompts than the ones I originally put in - I can just download these on my kindle if needed.
Questions though:
1. I put in the book The God of the Woods would that also count as Deities/Gods ? - I put a questionmark behind that prompt.
2. On the cover of The Last Gifts of the Universe there is a rocket - are we counting that one as a vehicle as it transporting people to the moon etc.?
3. Are We counting mushrooms as vegetables? I know they are fungus but I do believe that they count as vegetables for nutrition so I´m not sure about that one (Regrettably, I am About to Cause Trouble
4. Are we counting Husbands as family members? I´d say yes, I just want to make sure. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
___
I took The Reappearance of Rachel Price off - as it doesn´t really fit the prompts.
Also I now put in way more books than I think that I am able to read - I´ll start pre-reading tonight though

1) I think God should count, I meant to say before because Norine had Godkiller which I personally think should count under the god prompt, but I didn't say anything in the end because her books fit some other prompts
2) I think Rocket could count as vehicle, but see what others say too
3) Mushrooms definitely count as veg in my eyes!!
4) Husbands count as family members. I have a book with wife in the title I have lined up for that prompt in case I finish the others I read

To your questions, I answer yes to all of them.
One of my books shows the lunar landing module on the cover. Albeit not a common vehicle, I marked it as such since it transported astronauts to and from the orbiting Apollo spacecraft. 🤷♀️
===
EDITED TO ADD: Using this cover would also add buildings, animal, and the color blue. Maybe clothes (spacesuit)?

Great! Thank you both! I started reading Howl’s Moving Castle and am trying to also start Regrettably, I am About to Cause Trouble before the readathon officially starts as it´s one of my books that is fitting the most prompts - I´m just not the biggest fan of reading different books at the same time.
For The different Cover: I´m not sure about how official it is? My version has Rory August as author, in yours it is Riley August. Also the version you showed seems to have a few more pages. If you guys say this fits better we can use that cover I just hope it´s not one of those scam-book versions haha.

Oops! I didn't catch the name difference. I just saw the blue covers in the editions list here.
https://www.goodreads.com/work/editio...
Perhaps the author transitioned and changed their name. I remember some confusion when I read The Map of Salt and Stars by then Jennifer Joukhadar who later changed his name to Zeyn or Zeynab Joukhadar. Some covers on GR show both the new name and the deadname. 😕
Back to Rory and/or Riley, I clicked some links for Rory that redirected to Riley pages and mentioned a space cat. The profile pictures are similar, as are their bios.
https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/...
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
That said, if we can fit the black 2022 Rory cover into the prompts, using the blue 2024 Riley cover won't be unnecessary. 🤷♀️

I think you might be right about the author transitioning as in the amazon bio they/them pronouns are used. I just wanted to download the book onto my kindle but it seems the book isn´t on the german market until October first even though it was first published in 2022 - I couldn´t find a single digital or physical copy of it. I took it off the sheet now. I think I have enough other books lined up and if not I´ll have a look what else I could read.

So these are the books I do have lined up now and ready to read either as physical edition or on my kindle. I might not be able to read all of them but we will see.

I just read through all of the comments - thanks also for looking through our sheet!
Good to have you here as well, Alina. Whereabouts in Germany are you from (only roughly, don't worry, and it's also okay if you don't want to share!).
Also, TerryJane, I find it great that we have people from multiple countries as well. Really looking forward to reading lots of interesting books together with you all and getting to know you a bit better.
Mansi, I definitely seem to be using a lot of exlamation marks on goodreads as well!
I am not yet sure whether I will be able to read all of the books I put into the sheet - but I will definitely try and have started multiple of them already (just as a warning in advance, especially Weyward and When the Moon Hatched might be tight fits... but else I will try to look for shorter replacements).
Very much looking forward to the Readathon! :)

I'm getting excited too, I'm a night owl so I will be be opening my book bang on midnight!

If we complete all the prompts, we will get a set of bonus prompts, and some of our books could get shuffled to accommodate those.
Lastly, everyone please note that there's a section all the way at the bottom for any books that are DNFed, too short, or don't fit any prompts. We can get page points for those. No graphic novels or comics, though.

I have a similar problem with Cornelia Funke books. If only I knew more languages, I wouldn't have to wait for an English translation. *sigh*

Also, I just downloaded How to Solve Your Own Murder this morning when came off hold. It could fit many prompts if it's needed -- crime, animal, building, parts of a house, things in a garden, weapon, accessory, and more.

I am getting really excited! (but I sadly had to take on an additional shift tomorrow so I am working 12 hours and might not have a lot of time on the first day... oh well, will try to do better on Saturday!)
Also, TerryJane - which books from Cornelia Funke have you read? The Inkheart series? (and you are looking for the new one?)

These books are mystery, historical fiction, and a nonfiction (space program). None are abridged. That's the first thing I checked. 🤷♀️ (When reading multiple books, I have to choose different genres and/or timelines so I can keep them straight in my mind.)
I've read three of the Inkworld books and entered a GR giveaway for #4 this morning. 🤞 I've read part of the Reckless and Dragon Rider series, as well as some of her children and YA standalones, such as Thief Lord and When Santa Fell to Earth. 😁
Too bad about the change in your schedule, but it's good for the people who need your help. It looks like the readathon will start for you Europeans in just a few hours. I still have an 11.5-hour wait. ⏱

Me, too! LOL

I´m not sure about those different audio-lengths but maybe the writing styles of the books just make them "harder" to read? My kindle told me that I would need 22hours to read through The Fellowship of the Ring and I know that for other books that have around 400pages it only says that I need like 6-10 hours.
@Lina I´m from Sachsen-Anhalt (don´t know the english translation for that and too lazy to look it up haha) How about you?
@Lynn I only read Inkheart and the two following books of the series but those are clear recommendations
_____
It´s almost readathon time here in germany so I´m making myself ready to read the first pages until I fall asleep. Happy reading to all of you!

I highly recommend the Inkworld trilogy: Inkheart, Inkspell, and Inkdeath. The fourth book is The Color of Revenge, but it won't be published in the US until November.

We discovered her when my daughters were young and we listened to When Santa Fell To Earth during a trip. On another trip, my then 11 y/o started the Dragon Rider series and I followed her lead. Ms. Funke does such a terrific job bringing the reader into the worlds she weaves.

@Alina: ah, nice! I went there for a week a while back to hike, which was fun! :) We stayed in a castle, which was also very nice! I am originally from Hesse, but now living in Baden-Württemberg.
And I am also counting down minutes till the readathon starts! Will read a bit before going to bed :)

Thanks!

Understandable! I haven't been up as long as you, and I still have hours to go before bed time. Go get some rest before your mind explodes. 🤯
Today I am finishing up some books that were in progress before the readathon, so it's not as impressive as it seems. 😉

Anyway, I had removed this from the planning sheet, so just marked the DOUBLES Body Part prompt as completed, but feel free to use it for the SINGLE prompt if that fits better!
Should finish Finlay Donovan Is Killing It and either Mrs. Dalloway or The Mysterious Stranger and Other Stories MYSTERIOUS STRANGER & OTHER ST tomorrow.
Happy reading, Read-Handed teammates!

Hopefully you all had fun today :)

Hmm... I would think Column O would be the correct one since it totals the prompt points and page points.
EDITED TO ADD: Also, LYNN's prompt and/or page points haven't been added to the Tracking tab yet. That might be throwing things off. (I don't know what the formula was originally.)

- which wouldn't make any sense because it would mean we end up with just the prompt points (as M127 and M 128 are always gonna be empty).
If we change it to =SUMME(L127:L128)+M125, which I have done, it adds the page points for the first and second part of the Readathon and then adds the prompt points - which means it would be checking whether all of the points have been correctly put into the other column (proof checking the O column).
There is just a different score until everyone has added the finished books (e.g., right now my score in the one Grand total is higher, because I have read 20 points of a book that I havent finished yet, so the 20 are being added to the Grand Total score at the bottom, but not to the other one.

I'm going to a last minute family gathering over the weekend so probably won't be reading as much but will catch up during the week!
Lynn those books sound so interesting, they're definitely being added to my list. I don't know much about Appalachia but saw a show about soul food in Appalachia recently and it made me want to learn more

- which wouldn't make any sense because it would mean we end up with just the prompt points (as M127 and M 128 are always gonna be empty).

Ahhhh ok I've got it! Thanks for doing that. I've also noticed the prompt points total isn't being calculated because I don't think it considers the '50' which is automatically entered through the 'yes' formula as a number if that makes sense? So I've changed the 2 50 prompts we've received so far to an actual number and now it counts them. If we need to re-jiggle any prompts later, I'll make sure to check the prompts total is still working
EDIT:on second thoughts, I've changed it back to the original formula because it might get confusing if we re-assign prompts later so it might be better to calculate the prompts total at the end

I just finished the last of my pre-started books, and have two hours left to read for August 2.

I’ll add my finished book and page total to the tracking sheet before going to bed. Just got home from the gym and fed the feline herd and the human husband! LOL

The first book about Appalachia I read was Jeannette Walls' The Glass Castle and it was amazing! I see that on Goodreads almost 1,241,000 members have rated it! That's amazing! The book club I facilitate read it 15 years ago and we all loved it, though her childhood was the antithesis of "ideal"! 😒 I can definitely recommend it as a memoir.
But I would read Catte's books before venturing into Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, if you're interested in reading it. Honestly, now that I know even more about Vance, I'm wondering just how much of this may be true or made up...
And now I have a listing of books from Catte's book I would like to read. *sigh* 😉

I've never seen a tracking sheet setup with "page points" in a column along with the books completed. I assume the number we list there is the number of pages in that specific book? Does that mean we don't get credit for pages read beyond that for the day? (I am leaving that blank for now!) But we have a double prompt completed!! YAY!!
Maybe I just need to leave this and go to bed. It's pretty obvious I'm tired! 🥱 Talk with you-all tomorrow!

I haven´t been able to read much yesterday because my cat got sick and I had to go the vet with him. He´s better now though and I´m already catching up on my reading!
Yesterday morning I finished The Fellowship of the Ring - I only had a few pages left and wanted to be done before reading something new. I put it in the completeted tab to "DNF, no promt or <100p. I hope that was right.
I also have started Howl’s Moving Castle so far I like the writing style. The plot feels kind of random so far.
Thanks to everyone who´s making that spreadsheet work - I was never good with these formula sheets haha.
Happy second day of reading!

- which wouldn't make any sense because it would mean we end up with just the prompt points (as M127 and M 128 are always gonna b..."
Yeah that formula isnt working - its not seeing it as numbers - so it is putting in a 50 or 100 or 150 in the M column, but not adding it to the M125 field (so also not the the lower grand total, that uses M125)... I have tried and it also isnt working for the doubles and triples, not just the singles; it is adding them to the O row though (so the grand total on the right works for prompt points)
Edit: I have now fixed the M125 field (even though the formula looks kind of ugly ...), the original one was: =SUMME(M18:M94), and the sum just didnt work as it somehow doesnt recognize the M column formula as real numbers; so I have now used the workaround from column O and just changed it to a + formula instead ... it is fine now :)
