I remember the cover being lime green with darker figures and maybe fireflies on it. The main character might be a boy or a girl, I’m not totally sure. Either they or their friend have a neglectful father who is a famous race car driver and mostly leaves them to stay with family im swampy southern state, probably Louisiana. Main character befriends a local kid their age and they get up to shenanigans, probably solve a mystery or something. I can’t recall many plot details, but I think that at the end of the story a magical white crocodile or aligator shows up and talks to MC. The family has been cursed for generations, I don’t remember what the curse does as a downside besides some magic powers. I could be misremembering that the family has magic powers at all. The book is not “the time of the fireflies” but that book has a similar vibe. Story takes place in summer/during school break of some sort.
