SOLVED. Children's/YA adventure? [s]

I read this book about 15 years ago and I absolutely loved it, but I can only remember a few things about it. The book had a child who was at their grandmother's house. I remember that she smelt of peppermints (I remember that because my own grandmother does as well) I think she had a cane that had an amber orb on top and one day they went into a tree and went either into the past or a different world. I know it's not a lot of information, but that is all I can remember and I've been looking for it again for 8 years now. I really want to find it so I can re-live the adventure with my children.

The Ancient One has a girl who visits her aunt. They are trying to stop loggers in Oregon. The aunt apparently has an owl-headed walking stick that sends the main character back in time.
