Just wanted to mention that my Internet is really quirky so if I'm off-line for a few days - no worries about me. We had some storms and don't know if there has been some damage.

You are sooooo right! It makes one appreciate one's eyesight a wee bit more when it is threatened.
No Kidding!! I have veils of floaters in both eyes. Makes it very challenging to drive with gray skies and at night. Also challenging at times to see the computer screen clearly. Gotta shake the head to move them!

There is a surgery, but blindness is a potential side effect. My Ophtal retinal specialist strongly advises against it unless it is so bad I can't read or get around. He says some people nearly go nuts with these and insist on surgery. Thankfully, I have learned to live with them.

I don't worry about it, the PIFM books we list are books we want to read so I will get to it when possible. Life has put me behind right now, first I hurt my neck and now to much stuff going on. I will get them read. Eventually :-)

Nothing has been to the inside of the house in like 15 years. The last few years we have completely redone the outside. I never realized how much all this costs. Then we had foundation problems which cost a small fortune to pier up. We will get it all done and then can sit back and enjoy. lol (I am done with remodeling myself so I will watch other people remodel for me) lol

My husband and I remodel houses together but we are getting to the age where it is becoming too much. It does cast a small fortune to hire out. I hope you can enjoy it all very soon:)
We have discovered how to end our California drought, just begin landscaping the yard. It rained so hard yesterday we can't get near our dirt filled front without sinking into mud. It is supposed to rain again today. I almost forgot what rain felt like.

I'm afraid a few days of rainstorms won't help, Patricia, since NASA imagery says that California only has ONE YEAR of water left.
The crazy leadership in California has not approved the building of a reservoir since the 1960's. The water just runs out to the ocean. They just released about a billion gallons of water to help 6 smelt in the Sacramento delta. The reports stated that it was enough water to provide for 350,000 people for 1 year. If it weren't so pathetic, it would be funny.
Yep. But the fact is, there's not enough water and this, pardon the pun, is just the tip of the iceberg. If these droughts continue, fully 50% of the worlds population will be w/o water by 2030...just FIFTEEN YEARS from now!
The problem is there are too many people in California for too little water. Most of the places people live shouldn't have water anyway - it was brought in via irrigation and plain diversions. Still, this is even worse. I live in Washington State (the Evergreen State) and we had practically no snow this winter. And, then you get idiots (looking at you, Bill Shatner) saying we should pipe it out of Puget Sound. (Apparently he doesn't know that's salt water in there.)
A commentator on TV was making fun of some celebrities whose massive lawns are beautifully green. He showed some photos to drive home his point. Geez, I have learned to take 6 minute showers. The same celebs are always anxious to preach to the rest of us about conserving. My neighbor has dug up her lawn and planted cacti.
I heard the best thing you can do to save water is to get a low-flow toilet. Apparently, it's the biggest gobbler. Also, golf courses! Jeez! Also, go with native landscaping and give up on water hungry grass.
We have begun conserving water by washing dishes instead of using a dishwasher every day. There are only 2 of us in the house so why use so much water.And I don't water the lawn or have a sprinkler system. I think someday we will all be in this together.
One of my customers is an environmental engineer. He said that low flow toilets waste lots of water (you must flush twice or more) and in order to produce one gallon of ethanol it requires 2 gallons of oil. Again, if it weren't so pathetic it would be funny. Also, ethanol damages engines.
Thanks Faouzia, I am doing better. It just doesn't take much to bother my neck because of the multiple spinal cord injuries I have. I've been getting ready to go to camp for the summer so have been running myself into the ground.

It was about a man who had to go to court fighting for the right to use a regular flow toilet. Where he lived was coded for the low flow only. His argument was that because of his diet, his poo floated causing it to not go down the commode. Causing extreme stress and anxiety because he tried everything to get it to go down but it just kept floating.

As for the toilets you can also get a dual flush one…kind of the best of both worlds. One button for low water flush for #1 and another button for more water for #2. My husband loves those toilets, lol. They go into all of our remodels.

I try to work on something until I need to rest. Problem is that doesn't take much. Just joking the other day with a friend that if I wash out a cupboard a day, I might be done by the time I come home in September or October depending on the weather. This past winter was really bad not allowing me to get out to the gym, so I lost some strength. I will gain it back as soon as I start working around camp.

I was up in Flagstaff because I went to Northern Arizona University.

They are more expensive, Amber. But in some areas you can get rebates from the local authorities for buying environmentally friendly appliances. I know you can do that in my area for water heaters, heat pumps, etc.

That works only if your water bill ISN'T included in your rent as mine is. I pay rent and my rental co. pays the water, sewer and trash bills.The only utility bill I have to pay is my power bill.

Toilet in a box for less than $100.00 and still going strong in houses we redid 5 years ago.

In the present day Sue is dealing with the events surrounding her daughter having walked in front of a bus, and in the past we see the abusive relationship which Sue suffered in her earlier years. Sue is convinced that there is a link between the two, even if it is only something as tentative as her daughter having a relationship which mirrors her past in the smallest of ways, and that there must be some reason for her daughter having made the choice that she did, however being somewhat unreliable it is difficult for anyone – including Sue – to tell whether she is seeing connections or whether she is simply imagining things to be there.
The main characters were so well written and convincing I had to remind myself I was reading a novel and not about a real life event. Sue's past life makes for chilling reading and is at times quite scary; once you know the full history it really is no surprise why she has so many mental scars. I really enjoyed this excellent thriller and look forward to reading her next book The Lie.

Living off grid just means you aren't connected to the grid. In many rural areas around the world it is hard or impossible to have utilities to your home. My husband and I are on almost 40 acres and there has never been any electric, water, phones or any cables to our property from a "company". It is definitely not illegal here. We run like a normal household and don't infringe on anyone else. I think that is where some get into trouble. If you try to do it in a restricted neighborhood…then yes it would be illegal.(or not to code)

I finished my May PIFM last week - The Woods by Harlan Coben. Been very busy so haven't had a chance to post my thoughts.I am glad I finally got around to reading this one as everyone raves about it. I have read all of the Myron Bolitair series and a few other standalones and unfortunately I don't feel that The Woods is as good as some of his others. What I love about Coben is the twists and turns that he adds and how he leaves you with a feeling of "What happened there?". I may have missed something but I didn't get that so much with The Woods. Don't get me wrong, it was a good book and one I would recommend but personally I do not think it's his best. I rated it 4 ★.
