QNPoohBear | 9079 comments They're under fire because they openly violate copyright laws. There was a big lawsuit with Google Books. The publishers don't want their books available for free. It is a valuable asset but maybe not so legal. This lawsuit has been ongoing for awhile. Fortunately, several public libraries allow teens to get a virtual library card to read banned books.

A bigger issue is the pricing of e-books for the library apps and Midwest Tape/Hoopla's new "ratings" system.

They own physical copies of the books that they scan. They loan them to one member at a time, for only one hour at a time. They are a non-profit library. How can this be a violation of copyright laws?

Interesting discussion here, with more facts than many other discussions on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/books/commen...

I have signed the petitions. And Open Library used to have borrowing times of something like three weeks but changed to only one hour borrowing times after publishers made a fuss.

I noticed that a few weeks ago; I thought it was only for the particular book I borrowed.

No, it is for every book now. You can renew the book immediately (although that does not always work) but it sure gets annoying when reading longer books.
