SOLVED. YA Fiction from the 1990s about a girl who goes to live with her father after her mother dies. [s]

This YA book was from I believe the early 90s. The girl's mother dies (possibly of cancer), and she goes to live with her father that works in a shipyard. He has a dingy pickup, and lives with the dog that she once loved, but her father got when her parents separated. The girl has short hair (think pixie cut), and maybe had the nickname Tommy? I feel like she was formally called Tamara. She starts to work in the shipyard doing office work, and tries to save money to run away. McDonald's gets mentioned a bunch, as there is one across the street from where she lives. A boy who works at the shipyard flirts with her, and they go to a dance. There is a part where she gets very sick (strep throat or something similar) and her father takes care of her. This may have taken place in Maine.
