DNA | 3 comments I borrowed this book from my library maybe ten years ago, maybe a bit less. I think it felt like it had been written in the early or mid 2000s. The protagonist was a teen girl, visiting or newly moved to this huge old house, either ona lake or the ocean. I think there was a masquerade or fancy ball at some point, as well as a boat race involving the love interest. At one point near the end (SPOILERS), the MC's little brother got caught in a mirror that had been left uncovered, which freaked me out. There must have been a time travel element, because something she did wrong near the end of the book led to the Confederacy winning the Civil War, leaving America divided and more easily defeated by the Axis powers. The alternate version of the character, in the new contemporary timeline where the South was under the control of Japan, couldn't remember any of the previous story or what was amiss.
This has been bugging me for years. I don't have access to that old library card anymore, so I can't check my Overdrive history.

DNA | 3 comments Thank you for the suggestions! I looked through both lists and didn't find the book on either one, though I did find a few titles I might be interested in.

I think I remember the protagonist of this book having to go in through the mirrors to save her little brother, but it's been so long that I can't be sure. I don't recall anything about the mirror being in the description of the book -- it's more likely to center the move and the house -- but I also didn't spend much time reading book descriptions at that time.

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments Focusing on the alternate history part, could it be one of the Crosstime books by Harry Turtledove? Maybe The Disunited States of America?

The list for Young Adult Alternate Histories may also be worth a look: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/8...

DNA | 3 comments Jackpot! It was Amber House! The sequel, Neverwas, was on the YA Alternate History list. Unfortunately I'm seeing that the series was never finished, but at least I can read those two books again after 10 years! Thank you so much for your help
