It takes place on the moon where genetic experimentation and/or nanotech is completely prevalent there to the point that it permeates the very air. All of that is completely banned on earth and citizens of the moon can never go to Earth, and any earthlings that visit the moon and want to return must be enclosed inside a silver seamless coffin that can shapeshift to have an avatar of their upper torso. I think the book was some sort of conspiracy novel, and at the end of the book the earthling was in an terrorist attack and had to be taken out of the silver capsule

A guess - Moonrise by Ben Bova?

Google Books preview:
- There are different cover images.
A Goodreads reviewer says:
- "From what I remember of other books in the series (from more than a decade ago), the rise of technology and the idea of it being banned on Earth for religious reasons..."
Google search of Goodreads:
site:goodreads.com "science fiction" nanotechnology "moon" "banned on earth"
