The book starts with a girl getting a present early in the morning at a store she works at. After letting herself in she locks the door and goes to grab her gift. While she's doing that a man comes and asks to be let in to buy something and kidnaps her. While she's kidnapped she is stuck in a room and meets a boy, who is also kidnapped, who found a way to get from his room to the room next to hers possibly by going through a vent. They talk and slowly become friends and fall in love. Eventually she escapes and begs the police to help her find the boy but the police say he never existed and eventually she finds out that the boy was her kidnapper
