SOLVED. (Old) YA Romance book about a middle class girl who attends private school and likes making her own clothes. Spoilers.

I read this book maybe 10 years ago and I forgot the title; it’s been driving me crazy for years.

(Warning- SPOILERS)

I think it’s set in New York, and the (female) MC’s parents are professors. She attends a wealthy girls-only private school on a scholarship. There’s a boys-only private school nearby I think is how she meets the love interest. MC is very interested in fashion and making her own clothes which her friends think is cute.
There’s some drama w her two best friends. I think the drama has to do w her two friends both running for student body president or something of the sorts and she isn’t sure who to support.
There’s a big event near the end of the book, like a ball or big party or something, where all the girls wear fancy dresses. MC makes her own dress to attend the ball. One of the friends plans a prank, which was meant for the other friend, but somehow MC ends up becoming the receiver of the prank. The prank was some random guy with red paint on his hands and trying to ruin her dress?
MC gets upset and goes home, and is taking a bath and her friends both come to see her and they make up.
