I read this book in 2004, I believe it was, and it was a hardback, so I feel like it was fairly new. It was set in the UK and a famous comedian/celebrity had died and the protagonist of the novel, who was trying to make it in comedy/television happened to be at his house and stole a bunch of notes that were jokes of the dead comedian. The whole book is the guy trying to get away with the fact that he is gaining celebrity off of the stolen material and the end of the book comes when it is revealed the dead celebrity was just faking it and comes on stage with the protagonist who has stolen his jokes.
