Help me find this book

Hi!
I remember this book following a small child who goes through a gate at night and finds a new world/secret garden. The only other thing I remember is a page where the child swims with large fish in the pond. And towards the end, the apartment next to his has a huge garden on their patio.

It was a large rectangle hard cover book. Possibly gold on the spine.
