SOLVED. Children's Picture Book. Boy lives near a dark and scary forest, goes in for some reason (looking for lost dog maybe?) [s]

I read this book between 2007 and 2013, as a young child. The book describes a boy living on the edge of a dark forest. The kid's caretaker describes how dangerous the forest and the creature(s) that live within it are. The boy ends up going into the forest (perhaps to chase after his pet dog?), and encounters a fire breathing creature. I don't think we ever get to see the monster. I know this sounds very similar to "Beware the Deep Dark Woods", but it is not that book.
