2.

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments Alright they've officially sent us their book...here are the options we've come up with so far...

1. The N.M.E. - Ashley
2. On Merit - Shelby (would read if absolutely necessary, but have a lot of other things I would prefer to get to first)
3. On Message
4. On Message: Precision Communication for the Digital Age
5. On Mexican Time: A New Life in San Miguel

Ashley if you want to read it I'd say go for The N.M.E. unless someone else wants to speak up and grab one of the other options.

message 653: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 461 comments I have access to The N.M.E. If they toss it back, I'm willing to read it the 2nd time.

I also found this On Medicine as Colonialism -- ebook at hoopla and everand. 179 pages. I'm not interested, but I think it works

The struggle for survival in the arena is a never ending cycle. Sometimes a tribute will luck into a boon but they are just as likely to be a victim of sabotage.

The Randomizer was let loose on all of the teams' resource supply piles. The Arena Masters are not heartless, the news isn't all bad. But the Arena is just a wee bit harder as we get closer to crowning a Champion.

In Round 2, 1 pile receives a boon (15% page point increase), 1 is left alone, and 2 are the subject of sabotage (10% or 15% page point decrease). Impacts to resource supply piles are team specific.

Your team's randomizer results

Weapons: 10% decrease (protected, no change)
Shelter: 15% increase (protected, no change)
Food: Left Alone
Defense: 15% decrease (protected, no change)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments I only have a second to check in, but go ahead and put me down for The N.M.E. (assuming no word count for the novel in verse is fine because the audio is 3 hours).

message 657: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments Ashley - I'm going to say go for it, since we've got to get things moving. The audio does check out as over 3hrs so I think we're good.

Ashley Elig | 68 comments Thank you for taking care of it, Shelby. I have been out and about all day/night.

CHAIN

1. All Eyes on Me - D13
2. The N. M. E. - D3
3. NME: From The Bender Squad to The Gremlins; Inside Newcastle's Football Hooligan Firm - D13

message 660: by Susan A (last edited Jul 16, 2024 10:19PM) (new)

Susan A | 461 comments So....are we looking for NME again or INS? I'm not sure where the subtitle starts

If it's NME, I can read THe NME that Ashley is reading. But that does stick us in a awful loop.

If it's INS I can read Instacrush

message 661: by Elisabeth (last edited Jul 17, 2024 12:07AM) (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments NME is the name of a music magazine so who knows? If that’s the title we could all just read different NME publications each time. There are lots of them.

Maybe we should break the chain and add a letter.

message 662: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments Yeah I’m not quite sure what letters we should be looking at on this one either.

message 663: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Yeah, that one is hard because it has both a colon and a semi-colon so who knows where the subtitle starts?

Hopefully one of the capts can weigh in soon / ask the mods if necessary

message 664: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I'm going to shoot it over to the captains group and see what they think because it's definitely a weird one and D13 was questioning it in their discussion too.

message 665: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Okay - asking over there. Might be another few hours before I can check in again so if anyone wants to investigate some INS options so we have them ASAP when we get an answer, go for it!

message 666: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments I think Susan listed one above. I was making a mental list while I was stalking their thread yesterday, so here are a few other options that I'd be willing to read too:

Instant Gratification
Insomnia

message 667: by Shelby (last edited Jul 17, 2024 08:32AM) (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments I've got The Insanity of Reincarnated Mages and Amorous Vampires on my TBR I'm happy to get to running out the door though so don't have a chance to see what the captains are saying.

message 668: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Welp the consensus from the captain's group is that were stuck with NME. So we could send it back to them and force them to either take the forth letter and do ENME... OR we take the hit and call in a favor from District 12 for a title that starts or ends in N that we can use to cover the N, leaving us with only ME to match which should be easy.

message 669: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 461 comments I'm willing to read the same NME book as Ashley if that's allowed. Otherwise, I don't really know enough about points and strategy to give an opinion.

message 670: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments Ugh, well that isn't great news about going back to "NME". I don't understand how the supply drop works, but maybe we should do that? Also, how would we be able to send it back to them and force them to take a 4th letter if they found something that technically works? Is it just because we literally only have those same 3 letters to work with, where ours had the option to add the "e" and the beginning?

I feel bad that we got stuck in this situation, partially because of my book choice.

message 671: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments Or I guess if Susan is willing to read The N.M.E., we could do that again and keep our fingers crossed that they will add the "e" the next time around? Maybe that's what Vicky meant by sending it back to them and forcing them to take the extra letter?

message 672: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments I'm a little hesitant to use a supply drop book only because it seems like round 3 might have 3 sabotaged (point decrease) supply piles based on the last two rounds, and that would leave at least one unprotected.

message 673: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments We can use another vowel at the start this time. There’s no The.
O, U,I or E would be easy to find and get us moving. That’s my thought.

message 674: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Ashley wrote: "Or I guess if Susan is willing to read The N.M.E., we could do that again and keep our fingers crossed that they will add the "e" the next time around?"

Yes, this is exactly what I meant!

Unfortunately we're really between a rock and a hard place because their title is only NME so we don't have any additional letters to fall back on for this. Options are:

1. Susan reads The NME (this gives them the 4 letter option if they want to take it) or we find another NME book - I'm doing some browsing quick.
2. We read the same book they're reading (this gives them the same options we have)
3. Supply Drop

Kaley brings up a good point about the potential of 3 sabotaged piles in round 3. It does look like we're likely to get 1 15% increase and 1 each of 5%, 10%, and 15% decrease. BUT we could potentially combat this by putting as many books as possible into only 2 of the categories and protecting them. We'd probably miss out on the chance at an increase, but a decrease wouldn't have as big of an impact if we only had a few hundred pages into an unprotected category.

message 675: by Vicky (last edited Jul 17, 2024 03:46PM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Okay no browsing helped, but I did find Enmeshed Essence as an ebook on Hoopla to offer up to D13 to follow if we go with The N.M.E. again. Or if one of them opts to read The NME, I'd read that one... I do need some beach reading. lol

On second thought... is NCE better than NME? oof

message 676: by Vicky (last edited Jul 17, 2024 04:08PM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Okay here's a potential plan...

If Susan reads The N. M. E.
and we talk D12 into reading Enmeshed Essence
then I'll read The Essence of Malice or we can find something else starting with Essence and ending with a more reasonable set of letters.

We'll have to take a hit from using Essence, but it will still have with 13 overlaps to their 10 which isn't insurmountable. And hopefully we can break out of this cycle.

If D12 instead would agree to read The N. M. E., I'll still take the hit on Enmeshed Essence and they can work with essence... but that gives them the shorter end of the stick so if I were them I'd take my first plan.

Dropping some Essence options under the spoiler to keep track of them while I'm browsing:

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments "NME" Rock 'n' Roll Years "NME" Rock 'n' Roll Years by John Tobler . No colon and it’s about the mag by a music biographer so not one of their publications.
If I can track down a copy I’d read this. It’s the sort of book we might have but I can’t see it on the music room shelves and my husband’s still asleep. Our son might have it.

I'm still not following....but with NCE, can you do a supply drop thing and use O to get Once

message 679: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Susan A wrote: "I'm still not following....but with NCE, can you do a supply drop thing and use O to get Once"

No, a supply drop has to match one of the three letters and it replaces them. So if we wanted to use a supply drop for this round of NME we could ask for D12 for a book that starts or ends with N to replace the N and would leave us with ME to match.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Elisabeth wrote: ""NME" Rock 'n' Roll Years "NME" Rock 'n' Roll Years by John Tobler. No colon and it’s about the mag by a music biographer so not one of their publications."

I found this on the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/nmerocknr...

Apparently with a free account you can "borrow it" for up to 14 days; but I think you have to read it on their site.

message 681: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments I also still just cannot wrap my head around how the supply drop works in the battle. I am open to whatever you think is best if we go that route, Vicky.

Elisabeth's idea sounds good if she can have access to that and the whole title definitely counts so they'd be workings with "ars".

Susan A | 461 comments This is available at everand as an ebook

Nmemesis by Pat Whitaker.
N'Mesne - The Avenger by Nikki Dorakis

If I'm the reader, I'd rather do the audiobook The NME.

I'm not all the keen on reading something I'm not interested in to make it easier for the other team.

I can get it on eBay and my husband likes the look of it. They say it would turn up by Wednesday next week. Happy to do that regardless of whether we use it for the Battle.

message 684: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments Elisabeth - what's the likelihood it gets delayed and doesn't get to you in time to read? I don't normally order from eBay so I don't know how consistent their delivery windows are. I'm all for using that book if you want to read it, but if it doesn't arrive in time remember we wouldn't get any points for our later reads even if we read everything else in our chain.

message 685: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Susan A wrote: "This is available at everand as an ebook

This is a great find! I think this is the best bet if we have someone with Everand willing to read it.

Elisabeth - I definitely appreciate your willingness to buy it but I'm leery of making that one of our middle of the chain books because we really have to lock them in and if it does get delayed it would put us in a really bad spot.

I don't understand why this better. I am willing to listen to the NME. I don't really want to read this, I would if we had no choice, but not just to make it easier for the other team. Can't they read this if I listen to NME?

message 687: by Shelby (last edited Jul 17, 2024 05:46PM) (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments Ok here's my suggestion and I'm going to give it 30min's before posting it at 6pm as we're going to run out of time to make our book choices if both teams don't start making some faster decisions.

Susan is down to read The N.M.E. as well - this does give them the option with enme to expand the choices. If they don't and kick us back the same three letters I'll take on reading Nmemesis as a last resort to get us out of the loop in the next round.

EDIT: And yes Susan you are correct that they could see our thread and choose to read Nmemesis themselves as well.

message 688: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments Alright - I see no objections so we have a plan. 😁 Going to post now.

message 689: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Great compromise, Shelby! Keeps us moving and gives us a way out of the loop we're stuck in if they don't take the bait. :)

message 690: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I understand the time issue with my book so go with the plan Shelby. I'll buy my book anyway. We may need it later!

message 691: by Lucy (last edited Jul 17, 2024 10:11PM) (new)

Lucy Luu (lovelucyluu) | 238 comments If we need someone to read Nmemesis, I have Everand and I'd be willing. Kind of sounds like a Dystopian, and they're my favorites so I'd probably end up enjoying it. 👍

message 692: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments Thank you Lucy! If it comes to that, we'll go with that plan. I'm crossing my fingers that we get some new letters to play with. :)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Here are some options I found on KU/audible plus:

Contemporary Fiction:
The Hint of Light (on KU with audio)

Cozy Mystery:
A Hint of Mischief (on KU and also in Audible Plus catalog, third in series)
A Hint of Murder (KU)

Paranormal or Fantasy Romance:
A Hint of Darkness (KU, but second in a series)
Hint of Her Blood (KU, but fourth in a series)
A Hint of Frost (KU)
A Hint of Delirium (KU)
Hint of Danger (KU)

There are many, many more I'm sure, but these were some I found. I'm willing to read The Hint of Light or A Hint of Murder, unless someone else has something they really want to read.

message 695: by Susan A (last edited Jul 18, 2024 07:47AM) (new)

Susan A | 461 comments Ght would force them to use more letters, is that right? but it should be easy to find a book that works

message 696: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments Kaley do you have a preference? I'm happy to have the first person speaking up take the next book as our window for decisions is shrinking rapidly.

message 697: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments I'd probably be quicker with The Hint of Light since it has the audio option too, so I'd rather do that one!
