Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments NBRC Book of the Months
You have 1 month from start date to finish reading the book to count towards BOM. You must participate in the conversation with at least 3 responses for participation points.

***NOTE*** All Hunger Games buddy reads will still be able to be counted for extra buddy read points as long as you contribute 3 substantive comments to the discussion. There will not be the formal questions to respond to as with all other BOM's.

͙⁺˚*・༓☾ final girl (ari) (afinalgirl) | 31 comments hello hello i’m co-captain ari ♡ (she/her) i live near brisbane, australia, i’m a dental assistant, mama, skater, and obviously ~ a reader.

mostly i read horror and thrillers, but i want to return to my first love of sci fi and fantasy (at some point). i’m a mood reader, but i’m also doing a goosebumps readathon where we’re reading all 62 goosebumps this year 🤡 i read physical books, sometimes ebooks but a lot of audiobooks too when i’m driving or on my lab days ~ so i’m often reading a few books at a time, lol.

this is my first time co-captaining a challenge and i’m very excited to get to know you all, help you out when you need and to work with vicky & shelby (they’re pros)!

my timezone is UTC+10 so one us will always be around ♡

current reads:

Jax (jaxn) | 286 comments Hi everyone. I'm Jax. I live on the US West Coast. Currently I'm on a road trip in the Dakotas so I may be slow to post for a bit. I read a combination of non fiction from my TBR and mood reading whatever I feel like at a given moment.

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments Hey all! Super excited for this new game with you all! This is going to be loads of awesome fun. Vicky, Ari, and I are here to help and support you guys with this challenge so if you have any questions ask away.

Little bit about me, I'm an actor/producer out in LA which basically means my life's never on a consistent schedule. Between my bar job, and all the little additional projects I can find things get a little wonky. I'll check in at least once a day, but the timing of that isn't always going to be consistent.

As a reader, I'm open to reading anything and everything. I've had a bit of a slumpy last couple of months and am excited to have something to push me back to reading more. Of course now I'm questioning starting anything for the next couple of weeks since inevitably whatever book I read will be the most beneficial to us in this challenge.

All that being said, I can't wait to start! We're going to have the best time and Vicky is the goddess of all things spreadsheets so we'll be the best organized team around. Excited to play with you all!

Current Reads: King of Thorns (The Broken Empire, #2) by Mark Lawrence (audio on my walk into work) / Queen of Song and Souls (Tairen Soul, #4) by C.L. Wilson

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Hi!!! Very excited for this challenge. I've been on a Hunger Games comfort rewatch on and off for the last few months (I realize they are far from comforting . . . but to me it's comforting LOL) so the timing of this challenge was perfect.

My name is Kaley. I'm in the Midwest region of the US -- specifically Indiana -- with my husband, two dogs, and a cat.

I'm currently reading The Serpent and the Wings of Night but I haven't read in a few days since UNO ended. I've been taking a little break to catch up with some of my other stuff :-P But I'm planning to finish that before the challenge starts so I can start fresh when the time comes!

ETA in case you need my shelf: nbrc-book-games

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Also Ari that Goosebumps challenge sounds so fun!! I can't remember if I ever read many of the regular Goosebumps books . . . but I very distinctly remember that I DID read a few of the Reader Beware You Choose the Scare editions. Specifically, a mummy one that I don't think I ever survived. :-P

message 17: by Rosina (new)

Rosina | 1800 comments Hi everyone, I live in Canada near Calgary Alberta, in the foothills of the Rockies. I am so excited to play! Love the Hunger Games and was hoping to do a re-read of the Hunger Games this summer so I was excited when this was announced.

I read all kinds of genres but this year psych thrillers are my faves.

I work in finance and I love to start my day with a reading session. A cup of tea and just relaxing before I start my hectic day is so beneficial for me. I love to escape in a novel and be transported to another world or time.

I too just finished playing UNO and doing a relaxing read this weekend. CR is The Reappearance of Rachel Price.

Next week I am going on a roadtrip to Montana and just get away to relax and do some hiking with my bestie. Once the challenge starts the first weekend I will be camping and will not have internet from May 16 to 20.

message 18: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments Thanks for letting us know Rosina. That first weekend it’s not a problem at all but it’s nice to know for our own sakes when someone isn’t going to be checking in.

message 20: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments I’m planning to do both of them. Had some audible credits built up so just got the The Malevolent Seven on audio.

message 21: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Hello everyone! Time for a real intro - although I see tons of familiar faces! I'm Vicky and I've been captaining NBRC team challenges for over a decade now. And yes, that makes me feel old! I'm excited to see what the mods have in store for us for this challenge - it looks simple right now but I bet they have something up their sleeves!

I do woodworking by day and by night I spend too much time scrolling through instagram and not nearly enough time reading. I do most of my reading by audiobook because I have so many projects on my to-do list that it's hard to sit down and read without getting distracted.

I'm on the east coast of the US and you'll typically see me checking in during my 5am hour because I'm due at work stupidly early in the morning. I'll be around after work as well but I'm typically in bed pretty early thanks to that wake up call.

I will read pretty much anything, but my go to genres are fantasy, romance and any combination of the two. I just finished Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands today and started listening to Most Ardently which I'm enjoying so far.

I'm reading both! I'll probably toss my name in for DQs as well... because why not?

I picked up The Malevolent Seven with an Audible credit because NONE of my library options had it available.

And Salt & Broom was a read and listen in Kindle Unlimited in the US, so that's a win. Not sure where it lands for other countries, but definitely worth checking out if you have KU!

I like to keep my "captain-y" posts separate from my more personal posts, so I'll always use bold titles for them. :)

Shelby's tracking the BOM books in post 7 at the top and the two May books are there but polls for June's books are still up until the 8th. So check them out and vote!

i'm absolutely loving it! it can be exhausting because these goosebumps kids are super annoying, but it's pretty fun and its made me laugh a lot. some books are creepier than others! i was never allowed to read them as a kid so i'm really enjoying it haha.

salt & broom is also on KU in australia which is awesome. i started reading it a few months ago but had way too many on the go so paused it but now is as good a time as ever to pick it up again \o/

Ashley Elig | 68 comments Hi everyone! I'm Ashley (she/her) and like Kaley, I live in the Midwest region of the United States (Ohio specifically). I am a stay-at-home mom with 2 kiddos (ages 5.5 and 3). The only team challenge (and I guess the only GR challenge) I've ever done is UNO. Elisabeth, who is also on this team, was just on my UNO team as well! I'm excited to try something new and I'm glad we're all learning it together!

My reading is kind of all over the place. I would say I mostly read suspense/thriller, chick lit, memoirs, and contemporary fiction. I'm fairly open to trying almost anything though.

I don't plan on reading either of the BOMs.

message 27: by Catsalive (last edited May 03, 2024 07:03PM) (new)

Catsalive | 423 comments Hi, I'm Kylie buts cats or catsalive is fine. I'm in Sydney, Australia. I've recently started a new job so my reading has slowed down, mainly because I'm so knackered when I get home.

I have a dog & 2 cats & am shortly taking delivery of a 3rd cat, a 2yo who is in desperate need of a home. Not an ideal situation because I only adopted one in February but I couldn't let the poor lad go to a shelter that is bursting at the seams with kittens.

I read most things but don't like horror or really technical scifi because they bore me.

I like the sound of the BOMs but If I don't have it already, or it's not at my library, then I'm not reading it. I have put a reserve on The Malevolent Seven so I may get to it in time, but the library doesn't have Salt & Broom.

Cindy | 152 comments Hello everyone!

My name is Cindy and I live in Colorado with my husband and 2 girls, ages 2 and 11 weeks. I work in a hospital pharmacy, although I am still on maternity leave for one more week! I pretty much read anything and everything. I don’t really read horror though, if I do it’s rarely. I do read more romance than anything but I love lots of fantasy too! I might get The Malevolent Seven on audible because it sounds very interesting

*headdesk* I went to add them originally and then didn't because I thought the voting was closed since it was saying that results wouldn't be revealed until the 8th. Duh! That's because I already voted. I'm an idiot. Will add the links to the tracking post.

message 30: by Heli (new)

Heli | 509 comments Hi guys!

I'm Heli from Finland. I'm married and have two grown sons. I'm a practical nurse and work in a housing unit for people with intellectual disabilities. My favorite genres are mysteries and thrillers, but I also love variety and often read fantasy, sci-fi, horror, classics, romance etc.

I won't be reading BOM's this month. They are not available in my library.

message 31: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Tracking Spreadsheet

The tracking spreadsheet is located here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Please hit that view only -> request edit access button OR you can message me your e-mail and I'll get you access.

Right now it's pretty simple, but if you've been with me before you know I'm low key obsessed with spreadsheets soooo.... we might add some stuff depending on what the mods have in store for us. ;)

Quick Tab Tour

Tracking: This will be the tab where you'll enter all your book information and it should be pretty straight forward.

BOM: This is the BOM tab where you'll record any BOMs you read and links to your DQ questions.

Timers: This tab has start and end times for all the rounds and mini challenges. The timers themselves don't have times because I have to compute them based on my time zone, so I've also added a list of End Times in different time zones. If you want me to list a specific time zone for you, let me know!

Read Stats: This is just a tab I've set up to track where we are vs what we signed up for. Don't worry, we know life happens, so we won't be hunting anyone down based on this. ;)

I tend to get really long winded and over explain so I'm going to leave it at that and if anyone has any specific questions, let me know! :)

I've been having that same problem. And I was doing a buddy read in May with two of my coworkers . . . one of them started it at the end of April because she was worried she'd read it slower than us other two . . . and I was like hmm do I wait till the challenge or not . . . and now they've BOTH finished it already! It's a good page count so I feel like I should wait but they already left me in the dust so I also want to catch up ASAP lol

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments Problem is I read too fast - so while I do have two different rounds of Bingo I'm playing in the MM Romance group which amounts to 3 books a week as well as Pass the Parcel in RRRC (which I can often double with one of my Bingo books) I'm still left with days where I either have to pick something or not read...and we all know which option is the only correct one.

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments Hi Team. I'm Elisabeth in Canberra, Australia. I did a skim through the team members and it seems I've been on challenge teams with a few of you over the years. So good to be starting this new game.

I'm retired. Still relatively busy but with lots of time to read. I'll read pretty much anything for a challenge but left to my own devices I read mostly crime. I've been making a point too, of re/reading classics eg Anna Karenina, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, 1984 along with some Australian classics such as A Town Like Alice. A lot of the challenges I do have an Australian author quota which is great for finding new authors to read.

I don't think I'll read any of the BOM books.

I love A Town Like Alice & On the Beach. I do a re-read every 10 years or so.

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I’m reading a Bony mystery now with Arthur Upfield’s half white/ half indigenous detective. I remember the tv series vaguely. The first book came out in about 1929. Bony is a bit like Poirot. Very self confident and highly intelligent. I’m enjoying it.

Ashleigh (ashleighbailey) | 103 comments Hi Team!
I’m Ashleigh and I live in Brisbane, Australia. I’m a mother of an 8yr old boy, have a dog named Luffy de Ville and work as Export Admin in wholesales.

I like reading Sci-Fi & Horror, avoiding romance as mush as possible. I mainly borrow books from the library and will choose books to read from that pile based on my mood.

I can access Salt & Broom on Kindle, but I’m not 100% sure that I will be reading it.

I am looking forward to this challenge, and am hanging out for the 15th so we can start!

message 49: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Luu (lovelucyluu) | 238 comments Hi Team! Finally free to actually introduce myself.

I'm Lucy. Named after I Love Lucy if you liked the show. I live in Maryland, and work for the state in the finance department by day, and bartend at night. When I'm not doing either of these I am working on my side business which is currently crochet. I'm a dog mom of three. I'm a workaholic and busy body but reading this year has been a prioritized goal because the last few years, reading took a backseat and I hated it. So going back to do what I love. 💕

I have genres I like to avoid but in this year alone, I have read over a dozen books I normally say I dislike and here I am being a hypocrite, reading them and even enjoying them lol, so I'll pretty much read anything but my favorites are usually, dystopian, romantasy, and thrillers.

I've done NBRC team challenges in the past but not in the last few years, so I'm looking forward to reading with everyone!

CR: Dune & Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts One and Two

On the fence about either BOMs but interested in both.
