Whilst in junior school in the UK, when I was approx 8 or 10 yrs old, the teacher read a book to the class about a group of children in wartime Britain- most likely London. It was a similar style to Famous Five/Hardy Boys, and told the story of the children's experience during the bombings. At one point there was a church- possibly bomb damaged- and a supernatural air to the building. My last memories of it were when the children were walking across the bridge and could hear the sound of hooves approaching, and I believe it ended with the suggestion that a costly horse was racing towards them?

A long shot, but does it ring a bell with anyone?
It's bothered me for years!
