Karen Burnes | 2 comments I read this children's book in the mid to late 70's. The book may be about 10-20 years older than that. It was about a boy who was sick and couldn't get out of bed, or maybe he had a broken leg? So he tied string to darts, I believe, and shot them at items around his room so he could pull the string and retrieve them.

Capn | 3506 comments Hi Karen,

Was it a story book, or more of a guided instructional book with a protagonist?

I found this: https://search.worldcat.org/title/152... (not on Goodreads), but it doesn't sound like a story so much as inspiration for the bed-ridden child...

Any idea of format, or of the style and colour of the illustrations?

Stay in Bed Book is about handicrafts for the bed-ridden child:

A sick boy must stay in his room and makes all kind of creative fun with a ball of string: "I can do anything, anything, with a big ball of string!!"

Capn | 3506 comments Hi Flora,
I can't speak for bookel, but I think I can safely say we've both seen your thread and don't immediately recognize the book. You've got SBC* assisting, and so you are in very good hands - if anyone knows it from your description, I'm sure they'll pop in. ;)
Also, fwiw - definitely upload your drawing of what it looks like - it might jog the right person's memory. (You can see how many views your thread has received on the main Unsolved folder index page). ;)

*SBC is also Kiwi, and this matters, because Antipodean books are strangely tough to track down from the N. Hemisphere, where most GR users are. There doesn't seem to be much cross-talk in the publishing markets, annoyingly - we'd all like to read more NZ/Aus books up here!

bookel | 4018 comments The only issue with that is it could be from anywhere if not a NZ book. I had a look and tried to help but don't recognise it.

This is true. I also looked, didn't recognize it, saw SBC on the case, and moved on. ;)

(Best of luck, Flora - don't worry, we've both seen your thread, and so have many others. If we stumble upon a potential fit, we'll be back!)

bookel | 4018 comments Indeed. It's always in the back of the mind subconsciously.
