Was it any surprise that Absalom was setting Gwen up all along? Were there clues she missed? Why did he “arrange” for Mel’s beating or was that a ruse?

I was sad but not really surprised. I just didn't trust him from the beginning. I don't really understand why he arranged the beating. My best guess is that he was involved in Gwen being taken and in the planned escape and wanted to protect his status as Gwen's go to guy.

[Robin]

I think he arranged Mel's beating so Gwen would continue to trust him. Mel probably never knew that one of his trusted contacts arranged to have him beaten.

I still was surprised when it turned out Absalom was a traitor, primarily because of that beating. I think when she made arrangements to visit Mel, they went ahead with the beating to keep her in the dark.
