I have seen ten of the Star Wars movies (the main nine, plus Rogue One) so I'm rock solid on the basic story (and I am old, so I have seen EACH of the movies in the theater as it was released). I can't seem to bring myself to watch Solo because I am VERY attached to Harrison Ford as Han Solo.

So, which of the TV shows would you recommend I watch, if I wanted to give one a try? Do any of them have to be seen in order (like maybe you can't watch Andor without watching Obi Wan first, or something like that)?

what is the horrible plot choice? I'm probably never going to read any of the books so I'm personally not worried about being spoiled, and I am VERY curious.

Joanna G (joanna_g) | 359 comments Happy Friday! Just trying to get to the end of the week at this point.

Only two finished for me.

Completed
Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun In line with all the others, I'm enjoying the series enough to keep going. Used for the complete sentence title prompt.

Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World Wow, I had an excellent reading experience with this (as depressing as some of the content was). I described it as not so much blowing my mind - which would be sudden and strong, but gently repeatedly stretching it out. Had a library loan, and may buy a copy because I feel like it's something I will want to revisit. Not for a PS prompt, but for one of my book clubs - I'm definitely looking forward to the discussion.

Joseph and His Brothers For last year's longest on your TBR. Had a few issues: 1. So long 2. I left it til late in the year, so really had to push myself through with a time crunch and 3. I didn't enjoy the style - it was very factual (this happened, then this, then this) without real descriptions of how the characters felt about these things happening. It was just somewhat different than I'm used to, and I didn't vibe with it. But again, bc it was so late in the year and needed for a prompt, I didn't want to abandon it for something else.

Solo is possibly the most fun Star Wars movie. Everyone has their own reactions to recasting, though, so you do you.

The TV shows are all basically consistent with each other, but you don't have to watch them in a specific order. Here are my favorites:

The Mandalorian
LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures (aimed at children, but anyone can enjoy it, sort of like Phineas and Ferb)
Obi-Wan Kenobi
The Bad Batch
Rebels
The Book of Boba Fett

Whatever you choose, I hope you enjoy yourself!

I adore Evil Under the Sun, and that robe he wears to the beach in it shows up in one of the other Poirot movies he made. But the cast in Evil Under the Sun - it's so wonderfully over the top and has the best mixed drink moment ever.

I'm a massive Harrison Ford fan, so I was a little apprehensive about seeing Han played by a different actor, but Solo ended up being one of my favorite Star Wars movies.

Have you ever had a chance to watch the Poirot television series, starring David Suchet? I watched it a couple years ago and absolutely fell in love with him as Poirot.

Bea | 657 comments I blame this group and am so thankful for this group!

Because of this check-in thingy we do, I have learned that, when I have a hard time getting books read and manage finishing 0-2 in a week, that I am normal...well, that there are others who are going through the same thing, that is. So grateful for that knowledge. It suddenly feels like I can let go of some of that guilt for under-performing that I tend to pile on my expectations!

And, when I find a book that I just cannot endure...I now DNF it...or at least think about it. (I seldom would have done so before! Almost rarely!) [A moment ago, I changed that last sentence...well a few words. never = seldom and almost rarely. It read better with the never. LOL, but I had DNF'd 2 books in the past.]

So, I like this group a lot, but I dislike this year's prompts immensely.

Ron | 2718 comments It's almost the end of the month next week and I have no idea what my top 3 books are yet! I have my number one, but I'm stuck on two and three.

I've read so many good books this month and if I'm lucky I'll be able to squeeze in one or two more.

I know I still have time, but in the past I've been able to pick them pretty quickly. This time though I can't and it's literally driving me crazy.

message 65: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Harbeke | 698 comments Replies to Mandy and K.L.:

The Book of Boba Fett should be watched between Seasons 2 and 3 of The Mandalorian if one is definitely planning to watch both, but either can be understood independently of the other. Pop culture has already spread word of the little green guy, and I don't think anything else shown in Book of Boba Fett would spoil anything big from The Mandalorian.

Season 1 of Ahsoka is out on Disney+, and Season 2 is being worked on.

Columbo is created by the same people who did Murder, She Wrote (it actually predates the Angela Lansbury series). Instead of trying to figure out the culprit, the audience sees the crime in the opening of the show. The rest of the movie/episode deals with the criminal trying to escape justice and cover their tracks, only to deal with an implacable detective at every turn who gets them to slip up with disarming conversation and clever tricks. If you want to sample just one, I love the one with Donald Pleasence as the wine connoisseur: "Any Old Port in a Storm."

It SNOWED yesterday, last weekend it was in the 60s, and with the spring pollen in the air, my nose is going haywire. I'm starting today on my Chicagoland bucket list - trying to be a tourist in my city. Today heading to Pilsen for a taco crawl.

Challenges:
19/75 GoodReads Challenge
15/50 PopSugar Challenge

Finished:
1.) A Thousand Mornings: Poems
by Mary Oliver (#48 - Poetry) ⭐⭐⭐: I enjoyed this, but not a huge Poetry fan in general, so a lot of this I think went over my head a bit. I DO want to pick up her dog collection.

2.) Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros (#23 - Dragons) ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨: I enjoyed the second book just as much as the first. There were twists and turns that I didn't see coming and now cannot wait for book 3. This one had a few lulls in the action that I'm not sure we needed, but compulsively readable nonetheless.

Currently Reading:
1.) The Women
2.) Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence

QoTW: What is the most recent (or most memorable) book you have struggled to finish?

Currently reading-The Shadow of the Wind- a book
about a writer, the writing is just beautiful, set in Barcelona during the 1940's and 1950's, I don't normally read audiobooks, but I would love to have this one.
Resurrection Bay- the main character is deaf but the author is not, mystery thriller, really enjoying these books so far

QOTW- Fourth Wing Fantasy is not my genre. This one started out good, but was way too long. A little shocked by the explicit scenes about 300 pages in, cringing the rest of the way through the book, so happy when I finally finished.

But if you never read the books, check them out for the recipes!

the recipes from the series are yummy! The boggles (cranberry and white chocolate oatmeal cookies) and the cappuccino royales (milk chocolate chip cookies with coffee in the batter) are so good. Oh and the shortbread bar recipe with pie filling.

message 79: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherbowman) | 908 comments It’s been a busy week! I didn’t have as much time for reading (or checking in) as I usually do. I’m making up for it by doing nothing this weekend except reading and having a movie night tonight.

I think I’m all out of flexible prompts now. I looked into whether I could shuffle anything around, but the prompts are so specific this year that I’m not sure there’s much point. To fill “at least 3 POVs” I’d have to find another “book with a one word title I had to look up in a dictionary” or “that takes place in a single day”. It feels simpler just to find a book with 3 POVs and read that. Not that I’m complaining. I like this year’s prompts. I think I’ve just gotten used to broader prompts in previous years.

Finished
Female of the Species (an LGBTQA romance). There are so many things to love about this book! Character voice is so strong I almost didn’t need speech tags, something I didn’t expect from the title. (It’s a reference to Farscape, but the characters played by Claudia Black and Ben Browder sound like their Stargate characters, not the actor’s Farscape characters.) The line that Tanis is a lesbian in the show is taken largely as a lie used by Corso to distract Carter. I love that the author decided instead to make that the one true thing Corso said, and to make her relationship very important to this story. This is going on my list of favorite Stargate novels.

Orbital (a book that takes place over the course of 24 hours). This was fine, but I’m glad it was short. I couldn’t have read another 100 pages of this style of novel. Why is it I’ve never liked a book I’ve read for this prompt? It’s one prompt I would be happy never to see again.

Reading
The Four Million (a book by an incarcerated or formerly incarcerated person). O Henry's stories are usually good, but it's a struggle reading a collection. How many surprise endings can I read in a row before the surprise becomes tedious? We'll find out!

X (a book that starts with the letter X). Okay, I'm ready to change my opinion about this series. I'm about halfway through and enjoying this book.

Sooner or Later Everything Falls Into the Sea (a book with at least 3 POVs). These are some of the weirdest (in an amazing way!) sci-fi short stories I've ever read.

QOTW
The Scarlet Letter was a struggle read. I was supposed to read it in high school and college, but I couldn’t manage to finish it either time. We’ve had a few prompts about reading a book we should have in school or DNFed. I picked The Scarlet Letter and spent something like 9 months trying to finish it. I did, but I hated every second of it. I like Hawthorne’s short stories so I think it was specific to this book.

message 80: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 507 comments Happy Check In and Welcome Spring. Spring allergies, not so much. I've been struggling to focus on reading lately but it doesn't look like it when I list my books finished for the week. But if you look closer, they're mostly graphic novels/mangas that take little focus and can be read quickly.

Stats:
PS: 17/50
ATY: 23/52
ATY Rejects: 6/25
ATY Rewind: 11/25
DBC: 18/36
GR Choice: 8/30
TBR: 5/10

Books I finished:

The House of Hidden Meanings ⭐⭐⭐
PS: 41. A memoir that explores queerness.
I read a lot of celeb memoirs and this was just okay.

Punderworld, Volume 1 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
ATY Rewind: 11. 4 books inspired by the wedding rhyme: Book #3 Something Borrowed.
So I didn't need another Persephone/Hades retelling, but the artwork in this was so pretty! But there doesn't seem to be a sign of a volume 2 anywhere, which is disappointing.

One Piece, Volume 1: Romance Dawn ⭐⭐⭐
PS: 6. A book about pirates.
I wanted to check this out because of the Netflick adaptation, so when the prompt came up on Popsugar, I knew I had to read this. I thought it was cute and showed promise, but I didn't get completely sucked in. I felt the same way about Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1, so I'm hopeful for future volumes.

El Deafo: Superpowered Edition!: A Graphic Novel ⭐⭐⭐
PS: 9. A book by a Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing author.
I'd had a different book picked out for this prompt, but then my sister had a copy of this, so I read it instead. It was interesting to get the author's perspective on things, and the artwork was nice enough.

Once & Future, Vol. 1: The King is Undead & Once & Future, Vol. 2: Old English ⭐⭐⭐⭐ each
ATY: 49. A book with a senior citizen character.
So the basic plot of this is a normal guy discovers that his grandmother used to be a monster slayer until her group managed to kill all the monsters. But now someone has resurrected a zombie King Arthur and she needs his help to stop the pending apocalypse. Bonus points for the Hot Fuzz reference.

Not Your Crush's Cauldron ⭐⭐⭐
ATY Rewind: 3. A book with a negative in the title.
It was just a fun little paranormal romance, but it wasn't as good as book 2, and the resolution was a little anticlimactic.

Books I made progress on:
Call Us What We Carry: Poems
100 Children's Books That Inspire Our World
This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession
The Prisoner's Throne

QotW

I'm a mood reader, so I struggle to read books all the time, and it rarely has to do with the book - if I'm not in the mood for a particular genre, reading those books is hard. But if I'm struggling because of the book itself, I usually just DNF it. The most recent exceptions have been:
A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking - I've loved everything else by this author, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt and pushed through until the plot actually managed to engage me. I still maintain that any time a book is described as 'cozy' it's a sign I will not enjoy the book.
The Ten Thousand Doors of January - Another author I like producing a book that is only so-so. I just spent most of the book comparing it to other books that told a similar story, and just wishing I was reading those books instead. But I needed it for a challenge that was about to end, and I didn't have time to find a different book. (Prompt: A book with the name of a month in the title.)
Cruel Seduction - I'm still reading this one. I want to keep up with the series, but I really hate the one MMC, and I don't want him to have a HEA, so I'm struggling to finish.

Felicia | 156 comments Happy Saturday! It was back to winter this week. It was freezing the last few days. A bit warmer today but it rained all day long. I spent St. Patrick's at a friends house where her boyfriend cooked some delicious corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes. I also started watching X-Men the animated series so I can catch up to this new X-Men 97 series. I have missed a few check ins so this is a few weeks of books.

Finished:

The Wrong Family (no prompt) 2 stars. This had a very unrealistic premise. The ending was the most unrealistic part of the book and not in a fun way.

Fourth Wing (PS dragons) 5 stars. I was concerned because this book is longer than I tend to like but it was compulsively readable so it didn't feel long. I'm already on the wait list for the next book.

Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City (ATY title 6+ words) 4 stars. This was excellent. I will defiantly be checking out his other book Poverty, by America.

The Future of Another Timeline (ATY authors name includes one of four least used letters) 3 stars. This was cool because I love time travel. I do think there was one too many storylines going on. The book would have been a 4 star if the author had chosen one or the other.

One by One (ATY number in title) 3 stars. Good book if a little lacking in twists. I could have (view spoiler). I do wish we got to know more of the characters a little better.

Currently reading:

Station Eternity (ATY title ends in A, T, or Y)

Starter Villain (ATY related to phrase "its raining cats and dogs")

Upcoming:

Dune (ATY single word title)

QOTW: I have been reading Station Eternity since January. It's not a bad book but I keep getting distracted by other books with longer waitlists. This one doesn't have a wait so I just keep renewing it.

AF (slothlikeaf) | 398 comments Happy Sunday from the PNW!

I seem to be in a bit of a reading slump lately. Too much time playing on my phone. So I deleted all the games off my phone!! I still do wordle, connections, the mini crossword, worldle and a couple others online each morning, but then that's it. It's been a game changer in my life, for sure! Didn't really fix my reading slump, though. I did finish two this week, both of which I have been working on for awhile.

Finished:
Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah- Oy, the violence in this one. Good book, but made me worried about our future as a society. Feels like we are easily heading towards this type of future. This was for the prompt set in the future.

Slay by Brittney Morris- I LOVED this book. As a sheltered, middle-aged white woman, I feel like I learned a lot about how to be more anti-racist. Both of these books I finished I found very eye-opening and educational. This was for the prompt about centering on video games.

Currently reading:
The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley for the prompt set in snow. I really liked The Guest List by her so I'm looking forward to sinking into this book!

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling, a reread, for the prompt that has dragons. This is my current audible book and it so fun to listen to! I am rewatching the movie along with the book and that has been fun. So many funny parts they didn't include in the movie, which I get- it was a long book and long movie, had to cut things. Jim Dale is a GREAT narrator!

QotW:
The only book I can think of is The Land of Painted Caves by Jean M. Auel. It took me years to finish this book. I would set it down, then I'd move it to somewhere else, then I'd forget about it, then I'd find it and think "Hmm, I should just finish this book already." Then I'd set it down and not. But I finished it last year when I finished PS 2015 list and it had a prompt to finish a book you didn't finish. Which got me to thinking? How many PopSugar challenges has everyone done? I have done 9 now, counting this year, during the year they were meant for. I found the challenge in 2016 and started then. I broke up 2015 over three years and finally finished it last year. So now I can say that after this year, I've done all ten. I feel like there should be a t-shirt for that, or something. LOL

Have you had a chance to read Minor Mage, by T. Kingfisher? It's set in the same world as A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking. ..."

No I'd never even heard of that book!!! I was planning to read Swordheart but maybe I'll read this one instead! (I like Kingfisher enough that EVENTUALLY I'll read all her books so it doesn't really matter which one I read now)

Oh my daughter has gotten me into all of these!! Every day we send each other our scores for Wordle, Connections, and Strands. I used to like Word Weaver but then they started doing five letter words multiple times a week and that was just too difficult so I dropped it entirely. I also like Squaredle and Metazooa, and the weekly Flashback history quiz from NYT. Lily likes some others like TimeGuessr and Actorle, but they don't play well on my small phone screen.

The only book I can think of is The Land of Painted Caves by Jean M. Auel. It took me years to finish this book. I would set it down, then I'd move it to somewhere else, then I'd forget about it, then I'd find it and think "Hmm, I should just finish this book already."

LOL I was going to say I gave up on that series after the first few books (which I read a long time ago when they were first published), but I just looked it up and nope! I read all six books! I just completely forgot. That series went on for too long. The first book was phenomenal.

Which got me to thinking? How many PopSugar challenges has everyone done?

I've been doing them since 2015. Somehow I found out about the first one the year it came out, and I found this group. I don't know how. That first year was so much fun! I'm hooked now, but it's lost that freshness that it once had.

I play Wordle, Connections, and Murdle every day. Murdle is a daily murder mystery logic puzzle, it's a lot of fun. https://murdle.com/

I started doing PopSugar in 2020, after I'd been hearing about it in another group. I haven't gone back to do the earlier year challenges. I might do that some time.

Megan | 487 comments I had intended to check in earlier but didn't, so here I am now! I also didn't as much reading in as planned, but did finish a book. It didn't fit any of my open prompts, so I'm still at 5/45 and 2/5 for this challenge and am now at 16/100 for my overall Goodreads Reading Challenge.

Finished:
* Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb, which was a book club pick for March. We had a great discussion yesterday and all loved the book. Highly recommend!

Currently Reading:
* The Stone Home by Crystal Hana Kim, which is a Giveaways win, so I'd like to get it finished up soon -- I'm struggling with it due to the heavy-ness of the story;
* Much Ado about Nada by Uzma Jalaluddin; and,
* Family Lore: A Novel written by Elizabeth Acevedo and narrated by Elizabeth Acevedo, Sixta Morel, and Danyeli Rodriguez del Orbe.

QotW:
What is the most recent (or most memorable) book you have struggled to finish? I've actually had a few so far this year, which is unusual for me! I think I've read too many heavier than normal picks starting in late 2023 and continuing into 2024, and it's slowed my reading pace down. The one that I struggled with the most is Poverty, by America by Matthew Desmond. Despite its brevity, I found it a depressing, overwhelming read. The tone also felt a bit lecture-y/relentless, rather than passionate or impassioned, to me. If it hadn't been a book club pick, I would've set it aside for when I was ready to be fired up about the topic. Instead, it left me deflated and demoralized.

Ron | 2718 comments Excellent, my book Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren't Growing Up arrived.

I've heard mixed reviews about this one so I'm going to read it and judge for myself.

OMG no one told me t..."

Cruel Prince was angsty in a very whiny-teen sort of way that I absolutely didn't gel with lol. Vampires of El Norte felt like a more adult angst, if there's a difference! :D

SAY NO MORE! I am ON IT.

... LOL and I got it wrong (probably because I confused the two purples at some point) but it was still a lot of fun!

I think I have Jennifer! My train of thought is "why not?" - There's no pressure right now to, so I'd rather do it on my terms and if I don't like it then I don't have to stay. Going to try to stay until August -ish, so trying to get some of the Chicagoland things crossed off the list before the peak tourist season starts.

Your opinion seems to be the consensus among my group of friends. I liked it less, but not by much. I still found it mostly compulsively readable and now I just hope it doesn't take YEARS for us to get book 3. However, I want her to have enough time to sharpen up her writing.
