Leslie (dkrmwiz) | 7 comments The father may have been in the military, I think the island was off the NW Pacific Coast. Any help is awesome! Thanks.

Leslie (dkrmwiz) | 7 comments it was my bff's mom's book, so I'm thinking it's from the late 60's or very early 70's. I would have been in high school (late 80's) when I read it.

Rainbowheart | 28682 comments This sounds familiar to me!

I keep thinking of Evening Star and Cabins with Window Boxes, but in those books, it's the girl who is Native American.

Was the girl high school age?

Leslie (dkrmwiz) | 7 comments Yes. she had to take a ferry to the mainland from the island to go to high school.

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5545 comments Island Exile by Jean Nielsen? There's a copy on archive.org and as far as I can tell it's about a girl called Maggie who moves to an island off the Washington coast after the death of her younger sister. She befriends a Native American boy called Mike who I think does speak but other characters think he's 'stupid'.
The copy on archive.org is here if that helps: https://archive.org/details/islandexi...
