Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments So many books, so little time.

There are a bunch of books I want to read this month from FoF and AE. Plus Pratchett.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Started The Gone-Away World this morning. And by started I mean read the first 14 pages before I dozed off on the train...

message 3: by Becky (last edited Apr 01, 2015 08:04AM) (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) OMG I know. I'm still working on Lonesome Dove, and The 4 Percent Universe: Dark Matter, Dark Energy, and the Race to Discover the Rest of Reality.

For AE - I'm going to TRY to read both Lexicon and The Windup Girl, but may just have to do TWG since it was my pick, lol.

FOF I definitely want to squeeze in Pines, and I have the ebook of The Innocent Mage, but I will probably not get to that one.

I want to read Invisible Monsters Remix for King group, since it was a last minute pick and I think that there might not be much participation (plus it looks interesting and I've never read Palahniuk before).

Also want to try to read The Nightingale for my HF group.

AND at some point in April, I'm going to participate in a buddy read with some friends and read Nineteen Seventy Four.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Acccck!

So overwhelmed with books right now. Plus hubby has been all about interrupting my reading for me to "do something productive."

Ugh.

message 5: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Reading is productive. IT exercises the brainmeat.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Nicki wrote: "My April reading plan might be getting as long as Becky's. "
That's not even counting the books I just want to read but don't have a group obligation for.

Abaddon's Gate, The Year of Reading Dangerously: How Fifty Great Books (and Two Not-So-Great Ones) Saved My Life, What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions, and The Stand (the "original" edited version, which I've never read).

message 7: by Charlton (last edited Apr 01, 2015 05:08PM) (new)

Charlton (cw-z) Reading Firefightand alsoThe Tamuli Omnibus, just by looking I think the 2nd book will be the longer read.

message 8: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Smart woman.

message 9: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Y'all bog yourself down too much in group reads. :P

message 10: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) True... but they are mostly books that I own and want to read anyway. This just gives me an excuse.

message 11: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I have to confess my sins. I've been stuck on Fool's Assassin for weeks now. I'm more than 250 pages in and I keep waiting for the story to start?! I read the new Mira Grant novella as a break, Rolling in the Deep, (some of the best she's ever written)! But I just have no interest to go back to reading about Fitz unless he either starts DOING SOMETHING or the Fool shows up.

There. I'm a poor fantasy fan, I realize. Thank you for listening. I CANNOT believe I'm considering abandoning a Robin Hobb book.

On a side note, I found The Ice Dragon at the used book sale yesterday. Pristine condition! I felt like I was stealing it from them...

message 12: by Christine (new)

Christine (inhalesbookslikepopcorn) Finished The Left Hand of Darkness, want to read The Lathe of Heaven, need to finish Acceptance but it's slow and I find myself distracted by other books. Started Roadside Picnic

Ooooh! The hardback illustrated?

message 14: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I finished Raising Steam - the latest Discworld book* - earlier this month. Not my favorite Discworld, but a pretty decent addition to the Moist compendium, some nice Vetinari moments, with a fair helping of real-world satire in the guise of grags - dwarves unwilling to move with the changing world.

Currently slowly working my way through The Innocent Mage. It's not entirely the book's fault that it's slow going - I've been very busy of late, and the copy I got is rife with typos and "translation" errors (from PDF to ebook, I think) - but the story itself isn't exactly riveting, either.

Laurel MrsJoseph wrote: "Laurel wrote: "I have to confess my sins. I've been stuck on Fool's Assassin for weeks now. I'm more than 250 pages in and I keep waiting for the story to start?! I read the new ..."

There's an illustrated?! No, just the newest book in the ongoing saga. I'm certain I'm 10 pages from an onslaught of story, and the writing has been stunning thus far. I just wish things were a bit less drawn out? To be fair, there have been plot developments. (view spoiler)

Sorry!

I was talking about The Ice Dragon.

I gave up on Hobb years ago when I realized she really REALLY put her characters through the wringer.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I'm READING!!!!

Yaaay!

Just finished Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews
Then I started (but its a WIP serial) Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews
Also reading Good Advice from Bad People: Selected Wisdom from Murderers, Stock Swindlers, and Lance Armstrong by Zac Bissonnette

I'm getting ready to start a series buddy read of the entire Kate Daniels series - starting with Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews culminating with the new book to be released!!! Already pre-ordered!

But I'm giving some serious thought to starting Bayou Moon by Ilona Andrews.

I'm starting to notice a trend...

message 18: by Charlton (new)

Charlton (cw-z) Reading Firefightprobably 1/2 way through.Still working on The Tamuli Omnibuspage 220 of 1031,(whew!That's a lot!)I like the book so far but it doesn't seem to have as much action as The Elenium Omnibus.
I did just start Ready Player Oneon page 108 and since I just graduated High School in '82 it's easy to relate to.That and I'm a huge D&D fan.

I've read the Tamuli and the Elenium. For some reason I prefer the Belgariad.

message 20: by Charlton (new)

Charlton (cw-z) I agree with you on that the Belgariad stands above all.And the magic was completely different, and I liked the whole family being shapeshifter thing.

Yes. I LOVE that.

message 22: by Nyssa (last edited Apr 24, 2015 02:22AM) (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I finally finished On the Edge about 2 weeks ago, and I'm currently finishing up Lexicon now.

The first thing I would advise anyone who is interested in the latter would be "patience". This book has had me on edge (ha!) and halfway to losing my s#!t because of all of the suspense, changes in perspective - timewise, and unanswered questions. So far, however, its been worth it , despite an awkward plot twist or two.

message 23: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Oops!

Yes, the Ice Dragon is the Illustrated hardcover ;)

I may have to follow you and give up on Hobb. It makes me sad. I love the Fool.

I love, love, loved Ready Player One!

message 25: by Sinistmer (new)

Sinistmer | 212 comments Robin Hobb is a hit or miss with me. I read a short story by her that I enjoyed, but then read Shaman's Crossing and did not enjoy it. I haven't really tried her since.

I am currently reading The Buried Giant. It's been slow to unfold, but atmospheric so far!

message 26: by Thaddeus (new)

Thaddeus White | 69 comments Just begun Oath of Swords by David Weber [this and the first two Honor Harrington stories are available as free e-books on Amazon].

Only a couple of chapters in, so can't really pass judgement, but it's enjoyable so far.

Also reading Sallust's work (almost finished the Jugurthine War). Liking it, and the Jugurthine War's more interested and easier to follow than Catiline's shenanigans.

message 27: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I finished Fool's Errand and started on Golden Fool. I'm really liking this one more than the first. There's more intrigue.

Yeah, Laurel. I do see that Hobb takes awhile to get off the ground sometimes. I do love her character studies though, and it feels like home to read through it.

And I do like that this series has a Laurel charcter too. Hehe

Shogun is so awesome! Are you reading or listening to the audio?

message 30: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I finished The Swiss Family Robinson last night for tonight's library book club meeting. Took me two weeks of struggling, but I did it. If I wasn't reading it for book club I probably would've abandoned it. I didn't expect it to be so preachy and violent.

message 31: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Oh my goodness, if you're a fan of Cherie Priest, pick up Jacaranda.

The only way I can think to describe it is Agatha Christie meets Stephen Kind, on an island in the deep south with a storm rolling in. A hell of a novella!

Nyssa | 2023 comments Nyssa wrote: "I finally finished On the Edge about 2 weeks ago, and I'm currently finishing up Lexicon now."

I finished Lexicon last night and am considering continuing the Edge series with Bayou Moon. However, I would really like to get another Group Read (either FoF or AE) under my belt so I may choose a standalone from the list.
I haven't decided as yet.

Reading the ebook. Which means I've gotten distracted from it by Pines. My audio right now is the Hobb..

Instead of reading either of the above, I’ve started The Android’s Dream, per recommendation. This book is absolutely ridiculous, and at times groan-worthy, but in entertaining ways. I can't help but wonder what will happen, despite myself.

message 37: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Nyssa, is that the first Scalzi you've tried?

message 38: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Yes, however, I have about 10 of his titles, including Redshirts, Lock In and Fuzzy Nation. My husband is a fan. :)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I'm reading Magic Bites, Broken Open and other random things.

message 40: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments After finally "finishing" 'Innocent Mage', I've been nigh devouring Jackaby.

message 41: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 119 comments Still working on some of last month's books (yeah, what can I say, I always have 5 or 6 books going). Finished the first book of the Lensmen series by E E Doc Smith. Great pulp fiction adventure scifi. You'll either love it or you won't. Some modern readers just can't take into account something written decades ago (in this case 80 years ago). I already saw one commenter say how old hat Smith's stuff is. Yeah, right. Just like Shakespeare's plays are full of cliches.

Right now, listening to Pratchett's Small Gods (almost done and loving it) and reading Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham. (1950s scifi).

message 42: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Small Gods has always been one of my favorites.

Nyssa,

I thought Android's Dream was a hoot! I enjoyed Fuzzy Nation and Lock In immensely. I liked the heart and soul of both books, combined with some action and humour. He has a nice touch in sci fi that I think few can pull off. Scalzi is an automatic purchase for me.

I hope you enjoy more of his work!

message 44: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I've read several Scalzi short stories, but finally tried one of his novels, Fuzzy Nation, earlier this year. I loved it.

Cool. I plan to continue The Android's Dream, although, Magic Bites is now calling to me.

message 46: by Laurel (new)

Laurel @ Chris - YAY!!! (I need to re-read that one soon)

@ Nyssa - always listen to your inner Book Siren!

message 47: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments And then I finished chapter 4 and everything changed. The Android's Dream has my full attention... for now.
