Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters. I’ve only just started it but it’s a beautiful piece of work.

Lesbian pulp novels were really interesting to read, and a blast from the past. I read the Beebo brinker series by Ann Bannon.

I really liked criers war, she gets the girl, and the love and lies of rukhsana!!
The first book is fantasy and enemies to lovers
She gets the girl is more friends to unexpected lovers
And the last book is on a couple already together and the hardships the main character has to go with because of her religion and her family

Definitely Crier’s war if you’re into a fantasy sort of vibe, the second book in the series “iron heart” continues the story of the enemies to lovers trope

underrated sapphic cyberpunk classic: Trouble and Her Friends

The Gilda Stories (1991) is one of the first books about a Black lesbian vampire...and the vampire found-family she builds is shockingly wholesome by the standards of that genre!

Poems and Fragments, of course! (It's actually astounding how influential Sappho was given how little of her work survives)

Ammonite (1992) - This one didn't speak to me as strongly, TBH, but if a sci-fi story about a planet where a women-only human society has developed (with, like, the outsider who visits and falls in love with the not-bikini-clad locals is also a woman) appeals to you...check it out!


Will also second Carmilla (though it IS Victorian, so don't expect a happy ending or, like non-plausible-deniability Sapphicness; Maven of the Eventide has a nice read-through with commentary on YouTube), and The Color Purple.

Also not sure if Water's books count as classics, but all the ones I've read, most recently The Night Watch, are good! Emma Donoghue (Hood(1995), The Pull of the Stars(2020)) is also in this category.

Orlando is inspired by a real-world Sapphic relationship, but if you want the book itself to have direct WLW content, you might be disappointed. Really interesting commentary on gender roles with the magical sex change of the protagonist, though. (Also beware racism)

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is one of my favorite books of all time. It's not really a romance but the two main characters, Eleanor and Theodora, are kind of up to interpretation as to whether they had feelings for each other or not.

You definitely want to try reading this. This book is in "free promotion" on Kindle. I promise this is a good read. But this book is recommended for 18-40 yrs. old readers (Adult R-18). Also this is a sapphic book under "Lesbian Romance" (transgender woman / intersex) tag.
