Trying to remember the name of a book series about a black and tan coonhound named Topper? I cannot find it anywhere

Could it be the Barney the Bear Killer series by Pat Sargent? The first book is The Grizzly. They're about a coonhound called Barney, but he has a son called Topper who features in the eighth book, Topper, Son of Barney.

If not, roughly what year / decade did you read the series?
