kendra | 16 comments sorry if this is already a topic but my friend and i love to buddy read the most unhinged books. yes, we know we’re going to hate them. yes, it’s a giant waste of our time. but we give the characters funny voices and laugh about bad writing. it’s fun.
anyway, if anyone has any recommendations for books that are so terrible or bizarre you just have to laugh, we’re desperately looking for our next subject.
for reference, the last two we read were haunting adeline and butcher & blackbird (no hate if you love these, they’re just def not for us). doesn’t have to be “dark romance,” it could be any genre. we’re thinking maybe we venture into thrillers next? let me know!

octav | 31 comments “things we never got over” by Lucy score. i had HIGH expectations for it, it disappointed, but not really since i could have a good laugh reading it. i buddy read it with someone and oh it was so bad but i kept pushing because it was so bad it was good in the worst way — it was funny how annoying and weird some characters could get.

Laura Jane | 26 comments The Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz. I swear the only reason this book was published is because she's a nepo-sibling. The antagonists are cartoonishly evil, they would be best suit for a Lifetime movie. There are "twists" that are so impossible and rage inducing. I remember I wanted to throw my phone on the ground before it ended. And the worst part is that the story premise wasn't bad. I have no idea how an idea like this was botched beyond repair, its over a year later and what makes me laugh about it was that it was ever published in the first place

Bella(✨❤️Hopeful Romantic❤️✨) | 251 comments This is hard because there’s so many. And they weren’t LAUGHABLY bad it was more like I HATE READING THIS SO MUCH AND THIS IS ACTIVELY PAINFUL. But the first book that comes to mind is Eragon by Christopher Paolini. It was soooo BORING(you should see my review of the book😂).

Nora (Grayson's version) (noraseed) | 179 comments ugly love by CoHo :/

Hannah | 2 comments A book i could not finish because the writing was so bad/weird was "The best kind of forever" by Celeste Briars (Ice-hockey romance), everything was describe with 3 metaphors, it was ridiculous.
I gave 1 Star to "The Betrothed" by Kiera Cass (fantasy romance) because i found it really bad. The main character is kinda dumb, the instlove is weird, the love triange is stupid and the ending is kinda hilariously random.
I gave 2 Stars to "Mated to the Monster" by Sarah Spade (Monster Smut). The begining was funny but it got boring towards the end, but maybe if you read it with a friend it stays funny dumb.

Celeste | 40 comments hi, I'm here to drop some YA books and authors that i have personal beef with:
- picked up toilet Paper Princess because it was popular with girls my age and it was a waste of money but also a good lesson on "don't believe the hype",
- After was even worse than I thought it would be but maybe is unhinged enough to be entertaining,
- and the same goes for whatever Penelope Douglas is up to (i'm sorry if anyone here likes her but i'm still scarred by one of the books in the fall away series, a friend of mine pestered me into reading it and it was so bad it sent me into a reading slump for almost a year)
- for a fantasy spin : Jennifer L. Armentrout, she has never written anything above mediocre in my opinion

Michael Bertrand | 86 comments Couple more for you:

1. Devil House by John Darnielle. This one's really bizarre.

2. Pure Life: A Novel by Eugene Martin. Another bizarre one, but this time with football.

message 20: by Haley (new)

Haley (hails_yeah) | 9 comments The last laughably bad book I read was The Alchemy of Moonlight by David Ferraro. I loved it for the spooky gothic vibes but the writing and priorities of the MC were so terrible.

I agree with the Armentrout statement. Really enjoyed the first two FBAA books but the third....just it was bad. I don't want to read anymore of her work. Good to know the paper princess isn't worth the hype.

Emily | 8 comments Lore by Alexandra Bracken
I heard such good things about it, but I never wanted to pick it up and read it once I started. I couldn't finish it, so much happened that nothing really happened and I couldn't get into it.

kendra | 16 comments Haley wrote: "Hmmm shatter me, it ends with us, credence, den of vipers, the deal"

i've (unfortunately) read it ends with us and i got 50% of the way through credence before i decided i loved myself too much to finish it. den of vipers and the deal might be good to put on our list tho!

funny you say that because i read DJ&tS in 2019 or 2020 and really liked it but then i watched the first few episodes of the show on amazon prime and was like "....this lowkey sucks ass" loll. changed my perspective on the book too.

rowan 🏹 | 2 comments twisted hate. it was sooo boring i dnfed it. there was like zero actual plot and the plot that WAS there was only there to cause smut which was the only thing happening in the book after page 150 and it was kinda gross. not for me at least. it was just so boring like we aren’t on wattpad, why are you cutting down trees for this shit.

message 31: by Henna_UwU (new)

Henna_UwU | 99 comments The Martian and All-American Boys.

I have no idea how The Martian got popular. The MC is super annoying, the plot spends the whole time doing the exact same thing, and the epistolary style is dropped when it becomes inconvenient. Also, Andy Weir cannot write characters outside of one specific archetype.

The message of All-American Boys is good, but the writing is really terrible, Quinn was super annoying, and the book ended before reaching a conclusion because the two authors couldn't figure out what to do when their characters had to interact. Really disappointing.

Jennifer | 2 comments Maestra by LS Hilton - This book isn't really shocking. It's predictable and vulgar. I finished it, but only to see if it ended the way I thought it would, and it did. Give it a wide berth; there are much better thrillers you could be reading.

i read twisted hate bc based solely on the description i thought the fmc was gonna remind me of myself (she didn't. she was awful.) and it literally took years off my life. idk if you got to the part with the art heist but it literally had no business being there.

kendra | 16 comments Roxanne wrote: "a few years ago i read supermarket by bobby hall (logic) to spite an ex (whose favorite musician in the world is logic) and was contented to know that it was a laughably bad, arguably stolen book"

red flag #1 was probably your ex's favorite musician being logic

verity is so ass but it doesn't hold a candle to november 9. idk what crimes i committed in a past life to justify my reading any colleen hoover books, let alone three of them, but each was worse than the last.

kendra | 16 comments Ashby wrote: "I'll get hate for this, but definitely Twilight... sorry."

we actually ended up picking twilight bc neither of us have ever read it. i'll just say this: if i was reading it by myself and trying to be earnest about it, i'd hate it. but it's so much fun to read out loud with your friends and give the characters funny voices. honestly 10/10 reading experience.
