Week 11
Stand alone
Murder Road
Simone St. James
May 1, 2024
341 pages
3 stars
Review:
I have read several of Simone St James’s books. The Sun Down Motel was my favorite. This book was my least favorite so far. I found the plot confusing. The main couple were just annoying and not appealing at all. The surprise ending was not so surprising! I wouldn’t reccomend this book, I don’t feel it really represents Simone St James’s writing abilities. I would read The Sun Down Motel first.

The Secret Keepers: A spellbinding mystery and rich historical fiction novel that will sweep you away in 2024 by Tilly Bagshawe
Date Read: 02/05
Rating: ★★★★
Review:
This book was a great mix of Historical fiction and mystery and family secrets.
In the summer of 1928, a death takes place that will lead to events that change the Challant family forever. The youngest of their children Ines will be plagues with memories that she has buried of that night, long ago. We are brought back to the present day where is starting to rewind her journey and rediscover the truth of what really happened.
This is a very well written book with in depth characters that keep you turning the pages. I really enjoyed the book.

Absolute page-turner! Great summer read! I was invested from the first page. I read this in one day as I could not put it down! I did not completely guess the twist even though I thought I knew it. So have at it, people!

There'll Be Peace When You Are Done: Actors and Fans Celebrate the Legacy of Supernatural by Lynn S. Zubernis
Finished: 5/2/24
Rating: 3 stars
Review:
I always loved the Supernatural series and this seemed to be right book for me. I listened to it and it was a bit a of a disappointment. There were supposed to be stories from the actors and fans but it was mostly fan stories which all pretty seemed the same. The couple of actors were sprinkled in were interesting but not worth the whole book.

Book: A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking
Author: T. Kingfisher
Date Read: 5/3/2024
Pages: 306
Rating: 4 stars
Review:
This is a YA book but I was drawn to its fantastic cover.
Mona, age 14, is a wizarding baker. The only power she seems to have is to be able to control dough. She can animate and command her gingerbread men and she has a close relationship with Bob, her sour dough starter bread. When Mona comes into work one morning and discovers a dead girl in the bakery, little does she know that she will soon be charged with murder and in fear for her own life as well.
This book is adorable. It's a cute cozy mystery that's original and fun. It's a quick read and perfect when you're looking for something that's not intense.
I'm a huge fan of the works of T. Kingfisher and this story didn't disappoint!

This was the definition of a popcorn thriller - it was engaging, fast paced and there were secrets to unravel at every turn. You never knew who you could trust or what truth would be unveiled next. I really enjoyed this one and definitely was never bored. I liked all of the flashbacks and the multiple POVs.

Review:
I don't even know what I have just read ;/ this book was so bad.
If I didn't need it for a couple of challenges I would have finished reading.
I thought the Mermen concept would be an interesting one. The men were condescending throughout the book and treat women as brood mares only. It was awful. I certainly won't be reading the other books in the series.

Lover Enshrined by J.R. Ward
Finished: 5/9/24
Rating: 4 stars
Review:
Phury is the now the Primale and is to get as many of the Chosen pregnant to continue the warrior line. But he is supposed to first bed Cormia who will be the First Chosen. He keeps putting it off and Cormia is no longer afraid of him and is trying to get him to see that. But Phury is also a drug addict. Meanwhile the next line of the Black Dagger Brotherhood is coming of age and dealing with what that entails. The Lessening Society has a new weapon in their midst.
The book seems to drag until about halfway through. Then it seems to pick up and I enjoyed it again. It was a little angsty for the first 150 pages. I will continue to read this series as I always enjoy the stories.

Review:
I have an unpopular review of this book. Many readers loved this book. I have read other books by this author and loved them. I could not stand the plot or the two main characters. Plot: boy: hey I can’t do relationships let’s just have sex. Girl: okay
OMG!!!!! Really in this day age . I hope girls have more of a spine than this. I just couldn’t get past this premise. I only finished it for this challenge. Don’t hate me if you love this book…..

I’ll have my book finished tonight or tomorrow morning!

Qualification: 9th in Rizzoli & Isles series
Review:
This was great. A severed hand is found in an alley and the body is found on the roof above. All of this leads back to a mass homicide in a Chinese restaurant many years ago. Jane Rizzoli is back in the forefront, which I what I’ve been missing. This was a great mystery with some good supporting characters brought in. One of my favorites in the series!

Alternative - Published 2011-2015
Stars: 3

Review:
This was an okay read. Nothing spectacular but not bad.
Things I liked:
Southern Charm
Enjoyable story line that's great when looking for a quick, easy read
Likable main characters (Emma Lee and Ruthie)
Budding romance
Things I didn't love:
Granny - aren't you always supposed to love a southern granny?
The quirkiness was a bit much at times (Funeral trauma and craziness scenes in particular)
Not sure if I will continue with the series or not.

The Alchemyst by Michael Scott
How it fits: published 2007
Date Read: 5/9
Rating: 3 stars
Review:
The Alchemyst is a fantasy novel surrounding the story of Nicholas Flamel. I really enjoyed the story and the characters but ultimately the shoe-horning of SO MANY historical events and figures into the story just curbed my enjoyment of it. I get what the author was trying to do. Flamel was a real person who supposedly discovered the secret to immortality but the cramming in of all of the historical figures that he encountered along the way as well as the significant historical events just killed it. Could have been so much better but as it is...just average.
