Sara (sarasbooktalk) | 23 comments I do and I don't. I have a DNF shelf that I've made like the Read, Want to read and Currently Reading shelfs. Depending on how far I've gotten I count it on my own spreadsheet.

message 54: by Callista (new)

Callista | 17 comments It depends for me. Mostly based on how painful it was for me to get to where I got before I decided to DNF. If I was truly struggling and just couldn't force myself to get through it, then I count it because I know I couldn't do any more than that. If I could have finished and just decided not to, I won't count it. Not sure if that makes sense.

BookishDramas (sanjibkd) | 269 comments I do not DNF any books plodding to finish books sometimes over years but do not put any book as read till I've completed it.

Luca Francés | 6 comments absolutely bc i usually don’t dnf until at least a little over half way so then im counting it for wasting my time haha

I checked out your YouTube channel and watched your recently posted first video of your top books from 2023. If you hadn’t indicated it was your first video, I never would have guessed it. You appear polished, energetic, knowledgeable about the books, and interesting. I subscribed to your channel and hope more do as well. I plan to watch your unhaul video as well.

Annemarie | 46 comments That's a definite NO from me

message 62: by Angelica ray (new)

Angelica ray | 3 comments I rarely dnf a book because I just have a need to see it through no matter how badly I wanna quit but if i do I only count it as read if I am at least 60% through. it has to be more than half read for me to count it because I already spent time reading it.

message 63: by luckykarmatx (new)

Brian | 186 comments Boy, if only this theory applied to everything...

Yeah, ran a marathon yesterday...well, actually it was about ten feet...but hey l'm counting it. :)

Wow, that was a long week at work (but you only work part time, two days a week, four hours a day, from home in your pajamas). ;)

Read, means from beginning to end in my book.

message 80: by Alecsandra (new)

Alecsandra | 70 comments No, I don't.

message 81: by Kai's (new)

Kai's Darling | 660 comments this only ever happened to me once. I read 68% of the book and gave up on it. I did rate it and wrote a review bc it might help someone decide if they want to read it or not but I don't count it as read

message 82: by James (new)

James Joyce (james_patrick_joyce) | 16 comments No, of course not. They literally haven't been read. If someone told me they read a book and I found out they bailed at page 30... I'd have difficulty trusting anything they said. I mean... that's literally, "I have NOT read".

I have created two shelves, for this.

One is "back-burnered", for the books that I couldn't read, right now, but know I'll eventually come back to. The other is "could-not-finish".

Putting them in either of these categories removes them from my "currently reading".

message 83: by Jessi (new)

Jessi Blackmon | 3 comments I do nottttt! End up selling them or giving them away honestly lol

message 84: by T.A. (new)

T.A. Par | 48 comments Depending on how far I got into it. I'll count if I'm usually half way and just not finish.

message 85: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (quakerwidow) | 155 comments No. I have been known to skim-read particularly graphic passages, but other than that I only count as read books I have completed (including skimming the notes in non-fiction works).

message 86: by Dee (new)

Dee Turner | 17 comments That's a kind of self-cheat, isn't it? I have a DNF shelf, and that's where those eventually go. I feel each one as a self-defeat so I very rarely fail to finish a book. Sometimes I'll put one aside but leave it in my library stash where I can see it, and I'll read something lighter in the interim, then go back to finish. These are usually dense non-fiction works which I try to read as every 5th book or so; sometimes ya just gotta cave to the need for escapism--it serves a worthy purpose in these anxious times. Most often, the escape allows me to return to the grind.

James Joyce (james_patrick_joyce) | 16 comments Dee wrote: "I feel each one as a self-defeat so I very rarely fail to finish a book"

I used to feel that way. Until the day I thought about how many unread books I own, and how many I'd like to own... and how I'll never get to read all the books I want to read...

At that point, I found it incredibly easy to DNF a book. There are too many more deserving of my time, to read the ones that aren't.

message 91: by Summer (new)

Summer | 10 comments no bc I haven't read it

message 92: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1 comments No, but it is really, really, really rare for me to not finish a book. In the last 20 years I maybe DNF one or two books.

message 93: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline (applejacksbooks) Yes but only because (unlike storygraph) there’s no way to count the data I did finish towards my end goal. Rating and review those books though? Different story. I most likely, unless it’s an ARC, won’t rate and will just say why I didn’t finish.
