Are you going to read Carry On?

Deanna I love Rainbow Rowell's writing, so I'm going to read it. I can't see Rowling suing. It would be like Stephenie Meyer suing E.L. James. There's a lot of books out there with similar premises or characters. It's not like she's going to plagiarize Rowling. I'm sure she will give her characters a life of their own.

Emily Bennett JK Rowling definitely won't want to sue. I can't see her doing that, and if she did, the books are only similar, not the exact same. If she decided to sue Rainbow Rowell, she's have to sue every author that wrote a book about a school of magic. Yes, the books have very similar plots, but there are multiple other books with similar plots to Harry Potter.

Lev IDK I personally hated all the simon snow fanfic through out Fangirl so I am on the fence for this one.

message 4: by Aly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Aly yes :)

Lilian I could not read all the Carry On. I started to read it but then just skipped over them.

Emily I will read it. I am a big HP fangirl like most but I still see differences between Simon and Harry. I personally loved the fanfiction in Fangirl it is really like the fanfiction online for HP or the whole Magic AU in about every fandom. Carry On will be Fan-tastic

Denise 100%

Ditto, every time the Carry On stories came up I started hitting fast forward on my audiobook. They just didn't intrigue me, so reading a whole book of them would not be fun for me.

Anoeska Nossol I didn't even read the "Carry on" parts. I totally didn't understood it because well it is fangirling over something that still didn't exist and I just wouldn't get a feeling over something like that. So no, I'm not going to read "Carry on" since I didn't like the book that much and because of the fanfic that I didn't even read.

message 10: by Ella (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ella I agree with everyone here. And I also think that because it is such a different genre to what Rainbow Rowell usually writes, it may not even feel like one of her books.
But I might still give this a go, I don't know - it might be better than expected :)

message 11: by Lacey (new) - rated it 1 star

Lacey I'm looking forward to reading "Carry On," although, what I really want is more of Cath and Wren's back story. I'd love to read more about them planning the story, getting to know other fans in the forums and going to the launch parties as a way to get past their mother's absence. They talk about it some in the book, but it just didn't satisfy me.

And I also liked the snippets of fanfic that were included in the novel (which is funny, because I'm not a HP fan). I wanted more of that, too! I guess I just thought the novel would deal more heavily with fandom whilst someone was deep in the midst of it as opposed to someone growing out of it.

Joshua maybe, but sometime in 2016

Mis_Reading Carry On is about a fictional series- in a world where Harry Potter also existed. Cath was writing about one series, not the other. Harry Potter is not the only book series about yound witches and wizards going away to school to learn their craft, it's just the most popular one.

And personally, I was dying to read the book series her fanfic was based off of. So many people were, which is why she ended up writing this book. People (all over Twitter and Tumblr) kept asking her to write the actual books the fanfic was based off of, since both the scenes taken from the books and the fanfic itself were far more interesting that Fangirl.

If Carry On keeps in stride with the way it was written in Fangirl, it'll probably be way better than Fangirl, which I found just okay and very problematic in several areas.

JK Rowling's opinion of fanfic and those who write it is rude and insulting, so I really don't care what she thinks. If she sues, then she's being childish. Carry on is based of a fictional book series in the same genre as Harry Potter, but it's not the only one of it's kind, just like there's not just one Paranormal book where the main character who knows about the supernatural works as a private investigator and solves crime.

I think Ripoff is the perfect word for the book

Where did you get this information from? She's always seemed pretty okay with people writing Harry Potter fan fiction, with the exceptions being porn and people profiting from it. Did she change her opinion lately?

And I doubt she'd sue Rainbow Rowell for this but if her Agent is smart they'd have approached Rowling's people to get their okay before throwing this into the public. It was a Harry Potter stand-in for Fangirl after all.

Mis_Reading JKR is actually very back and forth, but generally against in that "Yes, it's nice you would want to, but don't. Mine. Not yours. Go play." way. She said years ago that she was cool with it, but then in 2012 says something along the lines of the above in an article with a whole bunch of other authors, like George R. R. Martin, who are also against fanfiction. As the years have progressed, she's become more and more against it. In 2000, she seemed to think it was great and was enthusiastic about it. 2004, it was a flattering thought. And by 2012 she was telling people to not.

Do you have a link? I'm kind of curious. Google search only brings up articles where she's cool with it. (Save porn and profit)

I will definitely read it as soon as I can get my hands on it, even though I am one of those people, who prefer Cath's story to the Simon Snow bits in Fangirl (I still liked them, but not as much as the main story) There are many things that make me think Carry On will be an amazing book.
1. Rainbow Rowell wrote the Simon Snow bits in Fangirl either as G.T.L. or Cath. Thinking about what those characters would write, which is probably why it sounds a bit like parody sometimes. She had said in interviews though that she is writing Carry On as herself, so there is no reason why it should sound like that this time. I really think that this Simon Snow will be a lot better than the one we have seen before.
2. What I really like about Rainbow Rowell's writing is her characters, and the interactions they have with each other. I don't think the setting matters that much. Whether it is set in the real world or in a magical one does not make any difference to me. She said before that Carry On is going to be a love story, so I think she will focus on the characters again.

(Excuse my English. I'm trying my best, but I'm not native.)

Jessica I'll read it just to see what it's like. I LOVE Fangirl so much it's ridiculous. It is one of my fave books. I was honestly hoping for a sequel of Fangirl to see how Cath grows from her Freshman year after everything that happened. And of course more Levi :)

Linda Dobinson I read Fangirl recently and totally loved it, and the Simon Snow bits, so I will Carry On :)

surprisingly enough, many are saying the simon snow fanfiction in Fangirl are quite different from "Carry on" with almost a whole different story, you might find yourself falling in love with the work and brilliant story of Carry on ((just a thought XD))

Well considering my opinion of Fangirl was that it was "just okay," and apparently Carry On has all the same problems Fangirl had (largely plotless and meandering) I don't really feel the desire to read another Rainbow Rowell book let alone the Fangirl spinoff Harry Potter slash fanfiction. Sorry.

Ryder I skipped over all the carry on parts, so doubt I'll read an entire book of it.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

I honestly don't think Rowling cares. It may be able to be considered as a HP rip off, but there are a lot of rip offs out there.

I also wouldn't read it anyway even though I loved Fangirl. It's just not something I am interested in. I couldn't get into the story when it was part of Fangirl, so I can't imagine being reading an entire novel about it.

Noella Ryder wrote: "I skipped over all the carry on parts, so doubt I'll read an entire book of it."

Same here. I found the Simon Snow book/fic excerpts so boring but I loved the main story of Fangirl

Ditto. I really enjoyed Fangirl but I either found the Simon Snow sections boring or I just plain skipped them. If the snippets didn't pull me in I highly doubt a full length novel will, so I won't be reading Carry On.

I'mogén Totally gonna read Carry On. I have it sitting and waiting for me as we speak!

Maggie I got both at the same time. I liked Fangirl a lot, so even if I hadn't had Carry On on hand, I would probably have picked it up. Carry On turned out to be worth a read, but not as good as Fangirl. The influence of Harry Potter is present but not overwhelming-- for instance, the magic is a lot different.
I can't see Rowling sueing-- that said, there's probably legal precedent.

411Junkie I love every book I've read by Rainbow Rowell, but I am on the fence about Carry On. I get that it's a form of Ms. Rowell's writing, but she will be writing Carry On as Cath, not as Rainbow Rowell, you know? And as much as I love everything about Fangirl, I'd much rather read a book continuing Cath and Levi's story instead of reading about Simon Snow.

With that said, why I want to read it is because the snippets of the story were actually interesting. There seemed to be a really good story in there so ... on the fence, lol.

Actually, Carry On is in fact in Rowell's writing, it is not at all an extension of Cath's fangirl versions. You'll really enjoy it :3

Electric Bubbles Just throwing it out there, J.K.Rowling did sue over this book
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanya_G...

But I can't imagine her suing for "Carry On", and so far she hasn't.

Electric Bubbles The reason I haven't read "Carry On" yet is that it really seemed like just a tool used in "Fangirl." It was a portrayal of Cath, and I didn't ever imagine it as a story of its own. Now it is....and I still am not really interested. It DOES seem like a Harry Potter parallel, and still not independent enough to need its own book. I guess I should just go read it and find out.

That is good to know. Hm . . . maybe I'll give it a shot.

Same, like I had a hard time getting through the book with all the Simon Snow fanfics. I think it took up so much of the book and I got nothing from them.

This Kooky Wildflower Loves a Little Tea and Books I skipped most of the Snow fic throughout Fangirl, and when I didn't skip the others, I gave a cursory glance. It bogged down the pacing of the book. So, no. I'm not reading Carry On.

Clara I liked the fanfic in Fangirl so I think I will read it. I mean, it was a little annoying at first but that was just because I didn't really understand the whole story (I think). I'm just wondering, is it worth reading? Im a big HP fan so maybe I will like it?

message 38: by scarlett (new)

scarlett sullivan Nope. Hated Fangirl because it dragged and I didn't finish it. Hated Cather as a person and only had a small smile at the "CATHER" and "WREN" name thing.

[carry on is probably going to be 400 pages of the character's hair or eyes being explained, BRACE YOURSELVES.]

I know, i liked Fangirl, but it was like a C+ or B-. As for CARRY ON it.

pretty

Legit. :3 you won't be disappointed

message 41: by Liz (last edited May 07, 2017 05:58PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Liz I see Carry On at the library almost every day. It calls out to me, tempting me to grab it... I did like Fangirl and I liked the Snow bits, but I am resisting taking home Carry On.
For one, I liked that in Fangirl we didn't know the whole Simon story. It made me feel like we were seeing a little glimpse into Cather's world, which is how everyone else sees her.
Secondly, Carry On is written as Rowell would not as Cather. I like the characters in Fangirl and I want them to continue, but this won't be that. I don't know enough about Rowell to say if I would like this book. I mean, it's basically a completely different world than Fangirl because it is a fantasy genre. And I don't know anything about any of the plot or characters.
So all in all, I won't be reading it quite yet. But after I read Elenor & Park perhaps I will reevaluate.

message 42: by Kyla (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kyla I sometimes skimmed over the parts where Carry on was being read aloud by Cath but I still read Carry on afterwards.

Storm I do intend to read Carry On. Not because I feel like I have to after Fangirl, but solely because I love the writing of Rainbow Rowell.

As for Queen JKR suing, who can say really. She is very protective of her books, but from what I have heard Carry On is not exactly the same. It is something I will monitoring while reading the book though, whether or not it is an HP ripoff. Queen JKR may not sue though. It will just depend on how similar the books are, yet even then suing doesn't seem like the best option.

Either way, it is a book I intend to read.

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

No because i didn't enjoy "simon and bazz" plots in Fangirl .Fangirl was a great book even without simon and bazz being involved.

Naarai Lev wrote: "IDK I personally hated all the simon snow fanfic through out Fangirl so I am on the fence for this one."

Me too, that's why I'm not gonna read it either

Batoola i loved fangirl and i really loved her writing and i think that I'm going to read carry one when I'm in the mood, sometimes i really just want to curl up and read a romance or sometimes love to read a action.

message 47: by Jamie (new) - added it

Jamie Dawson No, I liked fangirl but I skipped through all the carry on stuff in the book.

Batoola Ya same! but all my reading friends recommend it and im halfway through it, i might finish it now

message 49: by C (last edited Apr 02, 2018 06:02PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

C You'd have to pay me to do so

Melinda I didn't really enjoyed the Simon + Baz parts of Fangirl (I liked the idea of them, but after a while I skimmed through them quickly) however I loved Carry On.

Fantasy genre aside, it's much like Rainbow's other writing: just enough angst and a lot of kissing. It was a book I didn't intend to read, but then I couldn't put it down.
