middle grade tiny people find giant skeleton in vaguely steampunk post-apocalyptic world

Book I borrowed from the library around 2011-2012. It was definitely published after 2000 and i think there were three books, i only got the first one and I never finished the series so i don't know how it ended.
The details are vague in my mind but to the best of my ability there were two characters in a society of small people with vaguely steampunk technology have to go on a journey to find someone who can help them solve a problem in their village?
I remember along the way they saw evidence of the old world including skeletons of normal sized people who died in violent ways, no idea what happened to the world or why people were tiny now, that might have been in one of the sequels.
