A girl is convinced by a voice that's been in her head for years to jump into a pool from a cliff edge, to travel to another world. She's concerned she may hit her head against the rocks, or black out when hitting the water, but does so anyway.
She is transported to the elemental plane of earth, where she is treated as a long lost, or long sought after, princess of that land, however she is dissatisfied with the land, as everything appears to be made of mud. The ground is mud coloured, the grass is mud coloured, the buildings are mud, the people are mud, and the sky is mud.
There is a discussion as to why her previous world was so full of colour, and it is explained that our world, the elemental plane of water, was so full of colour because of refraction from the sun.
This may have been the start of a trilogy, but I was distracted by the Bartimaeus prequel in the neighbouring tray.
