Mason | 2 comments Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out to this community in hopes of finding a book from my past that I've struggled to identify. The book is quite unique, and I remember several specific details about it:

- **Theme:** The book is an illustrated story about different monsters from around the world. It's not based on traditional mythology or folklore but features original monsters created by the author.

- **Narrative Style:** The story is told in the first person, as if by the author/narrator, who travels around the world encountering each monster. The narrative includes close calls and escapes from these creatures.

- **Illustrations:** Each page of the book contains a full-color drawing of the current scene, along with the text, which is presented in a style resembling handwritten notes, possibly similar to post-it notes.

- **Unique Plot Elements:** One distinct memory I have is of the narrator creating a hot air balloon out of a monster's stomach lining to escape. The story also includes an encounter with a massive creature bursting through ice in the Arctic and an episode involving a volcano and a monster inside it.

- **Size and Format:** The book is large, possibly around 15 inches by 8 or 9 inches, and not very thick, suggesting it's more focused on illustrations with less text.

- **Mark Twain References:** Mark Twain is mentioned throughout the book by the narrator, though it's unclear in what capacity.

- **Publication Period:** The book was likely published before 2015 but after 2004.

This book isn't a children's book but could be for young adults or older readers, given the content and style. It's heavily illustrated, and the unique narrative format makes it stand out. I've tried looking for it through various means but to no avail.

If anyone recognizes this book or has any leads, I would be incredibly grateful. It's been a lingering memory for me, and I would love to rediscover it. Thank you so much for any help you can provide!

Update: I also remember a scene in which the narrator drills through Earth's crust and comes upon an underground petrified forest, where another massive creature dwells. In the volcano scene, the narrator's hot air balloon, which the balloon part is made out of a previous flying monster's stomach lining, is low on flame so the narrator descends into a volcano to re-up on hot air. While inside, the narrator rappels down into the volcano wearing what looks like a hazmat suit, and comes face to face with a massive creature inside the volcano, barely escaping.
