Slow Horses
by Mick HerronThis is the first book in Mick Herron's 'Slough House' espionage series, about disgraced British spies who are sent to work at 'Slough House' - where spooks go to disappear.
I'm very late getting to this fun series, which has received loads of praise. Still, better late than never. 4 stars

The Handler
is a solid police procedural with a dog. My four star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Nothing but the Bones is southern noir at its finest. My review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Going a bit retro this week with BE COOL (1999) by Elmore Leonard, his second novel featuring former shylock turned movie producer Chili Palmer. Somehow after reading the Chili Palmer prequel (GET SHORTY) many, many years ago this sequel managed to fall completely off my radar screen. It's time to correct that error.
I'm starting out the week with
Murder Out of Character by Olivia Matthews https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Tragic
by Robert TannenbaumButch Karp #25. I believe actually written by Steve Jackson. This is a pretty good entry in the series with lots of parallels to the play Macbeth. No Lucy and almost nothing from the twins. I liked it OK, 3 stars.
Read The Last Word
for the characters, not the plot. My four star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Not a mystery, but it's good.
The Lede: Dispatches from a Life in the Press by Calvin TrillinMost of journalist Calvin Trillin's writing was for magazines, and his work includes serious reporting pieces, short funny pieces, and pieces that are somewhere in between.
My review has examples, and I like his writing....and especially the laughs. 4 stars

Finished The Deserter by Nelson DeMille | audiobook read by Scott Brick | ReviewThe first in a new series by father/son writing duo is a fast paced action thriller.
I love a really well written true crime novel and this trial and courtroom drama is entertainingly written by the lawyer who defended his neurodiverse client accused of murdering the wife no one knew he had.
Zenith Man: Death, Love, and Redemption in a Georgia Courtroom by McCracken Poston Jr.review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I read that just recently, and it is very nicely done. True crime/courtroom drama in part, but for me that doesn't really capture the essence of what the book actually is. I'm writing up my thoughts about it now (finishing that tomorrow) and it seems much more of a cautionary tale about rushing to judgment, something that tends to happen way too often.

This children's picture book about a puzzled pirate, The Hoys by Kes Gray, has some great illustrations by Mark Chambers which I shared in my review.
My review of The Hoys
On a completely different note, in The Last Coyote by Michael Connelly, LA Detective Harry Bosch is up against it following the 1994 record-breaking earthquake that wrecked his house. Mind you, that's the least of his problems.
My review of The Last Coyote
I'm closing out the month with

Just finished a reread of a book from my 2016 NetGalley shelf. It was just as enjoyable second time around.
All That is Lost Between Us by Sara Foster ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Tin Badges
by Lorenzo CarcaterraA thriller about a retired cop and his friends who take on a cold case which expands dramatically. I enjoyed it OK except for a couple of rather silly scenes in which our hero confronts the villain in a battle of words. But it's a pretty enjoyable read -- 3 stars.
Bad for Good
was a dark police procedural My four star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Have just read The locked Room by Elly Griffiths , really enjoyed this and am looking forward to reading her book The Stone Circle (I wish I had all of her books to read in order!) going to finish this month's book The Turn of the Key
Catherine Ryan Hyde is an automatic go-to author for many readers, but I wonder what they will make of A Different Kind of Gone. I think it's one that book clubs wll enjoy discussing.
My review of A Different Kind of Gone
