I've got family coming for a week and I'm busy preparing for them, but I did finish my reread of Erasure by Percival Everett. Then, earlier this past week, my sweet spouse and I watched the film based on that book, "American Fiction," which we both enjoyed a lot, although the book had way more barbs and a lot more depth. I was going to read Everett's new book James, but I think I'm going to save it for my upcoming vacation in April, since I'm also auditioning books for my IRL book group so I can make decisions by the end of May.
I also finished reading The Owl Cries by Korean author Hye-Young Pyun, whose novel The Hole was so incredibly well written as well as beyond disturbing. The Owl Cries wasn't as good as that one, but I felt like I had walked into a sinister and claustrophobic space not very far into the book. I read that over the course of one night and couldn't sleep too well afterwards. So much ambiguity in this one -- you can't tell the gaslighting from the reality so it was dark and super twisty. Finally, I've also read a double volume called The King in Yellow / The Mystery of Choice by Robert W. Chambers. I've read The King in Yellow before but not the second volume and was just blown away.
Right now I'm starting a novel from the 1930s called Good by Stealth by Henrietta Clandon, who was in reality John George Haslette Vahey. Also about to start reading The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin before watching the Netflix series. I've had it sitting here for eons so it's time.

The Canal Murders
was a so-so police procedural. My three star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I also finished A Clock Stopped Dead by J.M. Hall
This too, was a three star book: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Not a mystery, but a good book. 🙂
The Swans of Harlem: Five Black Ballerinas, Fifty Years of Sisterhood, and Their Reclamation of a Groundbreaking History by Karen ValbyMisty Copeland is often said to be the first American Black ballerina. This is a mistake.
The Dance Theatre of Harlem, founded in 1969, featured (then famous) Black ballet dancers. These talents, forgotten by history, are the focus of Karen Valby's book.
Great that history is being corrected. 5 stars

Now starting A LITTLE WHITE DEATH (1998) by John Lawton, the third novel in his Inspector Troy of Scotland Yard mystery/thriller series. This one is set in 1962-1963 as the old guard and the counter culture youth of London are at odds and the country is set to explode.
Spellbinding, gritty and realistic historical fiction - don't be fooled by the beautiful cover!
Thorn on the Rose by Joy Dettman ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
One Man's Flag
by David DowningJack McColl #2, best read in order. The story follows McColl's adventures in India (for the most part) in 1915 dealing with Indian separatists and German spies and ex-girlfriend Caitlin Hanley's adventures as a female journalist and Irish patriot at the same time. McColl's portion is interesting and very exciting. Hanley's part is interesting as Irish history but not very exciting. 3 stars rating for the book as a whole.
The Princess of Las Vegas
was way too predictable for my taste. My three star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I've finished The Three-Body Problem and loved it up to the last few chapters. I decided to watch the original Chinese series before going for the Netflix version, and while there are more than a few changes, it's pretty faithful to the novel and artfully done. Up to episode 11 now out of 30 and I'm completely hooked.
Started reading Tokyo Express by Seichō Matsumoto (1958) and so far it's been really good.

Once We Were Home
Jennifer RosnerLeading up to and during World War II, some Jewish children in Europe were hidden with Christian families, or in convents, or in monasteries, or in churches, etc., to protect the youngsters from the Nazis.
Author Jennifer Rosner addresses some of the consequences in this fiction book.
Well-researched and well-written. 4 stars

Kill Your Darlings
by Max Allan CollinsMallory #3. A mystery writer is found dead at a convention of mystery writers. Accident, suicide or murder? Well crafted mystery with lots of name-dropping for mystery fans. I liked it....3 stars.
Just finished The Thief Who Couldn't Sleep by Lawrence Block. Currently reading Strangers from the Sky by Margaret Wander Bonanno.
I was less than impressed by Every Time We Say Goodbye.
. My three star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I seem to be tuned into Max Porter's unusual storytelling. Grief is the Thing with Feathers could be a tear-jerker, but isn't. Crow is a raucous, wacky crow-on-the-wall (and often in-the-face) companion to Dad and the two young sons. Outstanding.
My review of Grief is The Thing With Feathers
A tantalising crime/detective/thriller

I read Rednecks by Taylor Brown It is an excellent historical reconstruction of the coal miners struggle to unionize in 1920-21 and subsequent battle of Blair Mountain. My 4.5 star review, rounded up https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
If you enjoy fast paced spy thrillers
Matterhorn by Christopher Reich, set in Switzerland is action packed and very enjoyable review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Now starting DARK STAR by Alan Furst, the second novel in his "Night Soldiers" WWII spy thriller series published way back in 1991.My father is a big fan of Furst's books but I had held off reading him until earlier this year. I read the prequel novel a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it, so I thought I would sample the next book in the series.
