Honestly, none of his other series really interest me...

Limitless Lands looks like his earliest work, and has lower quality covers... Limitless Seas looks like a more recent revisit...

Mythica was probably commissioned...

War Core is military LitRPG mechanics, I think, and Derelict is a sci-fi series...

At least it was enjoyable enough to continue the series :)

I have read exactly 1 of the nominees for all the categories and have several on my wish list. I do like that they've added audio book as a category this year.

Timelord Iain | 35633 comments Mod
I read 1 Romantasy recently (Spellshop), 7 Fantasy this year (voted for Voyage to try and get the Debut author some traction), read 2 Horror (Chuck Tingle and Kingfisher), Voyage again in the debut category,

I think the audiobook category is wasted, and should have focused on books that lack non-audio options, like alot of Audible Exclusives initially (and maybe other sites offer similar)...

Only thing I read in the YA section was Defiant...

And I recognized a few more books/authors by name...

Curious about The Last One at the Wedding after reading Hidden Pictures last year (5 stars)... and I'll probably check out some of the Sci-fi...The Ministry of Time

Finished Arcane Veterinarian... won't be continuing that series...

Worst LitRPG I've tried in a long while... I pretty much grew to hate the MC and all his actions... especially after reading half the book, being unsatisfied, and reading a bunch of front page low star reviews... had to take multiple breaks to eventually finish, even tho I was pretty close to the end...

I love/hate how Audible shows you reviews when you hover over a book cover in a recommendation/search... that review seems to be from the bowels of the review pile, because it's never in the front page reviews shown when you go to the book page...

But they can be kinda hilarious, too...

I just saw one for a model's memoir that was 1 star: Zero Character Growth...

message 1235: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments 🤣🤣🤣 Not sure how the hover review is chosen because it's hardly ever the most recent or one marked as most helpful.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments There is a good instant! That's what I've been making for months. XD

Trader Joe's Colombian Instant Coffee is great. Fairly versatile instant. Use less for like an Americano, use more for espresso, etc. Plus, I basically throw in Häagen Dazs coffee or chocolate ice cream as my dairy and that will even out most coffee.

I did a fair bit of juggling with getting new stuff to use while I'm hopping AirBnB's until I move into my place in December. I had to trash the majority of my stuff from my old place. Black/White/Green -- All kinds of mold growth & spread on everything. The cleaning process to make sure stuff is completely mold free is either allergy toxic or so labor intensive--I just can't do it right now. Health, etc.

Anyways, got new stuff but tried to keep items to necessary items and deal with the rest in a "travel" & rig it up manner. It's good to use your brain to do something in a different way. XD

Current AirBnB is good. There are some issues, but things that would only bug me. Like the wool carpet in the living room that I rolled up while I'm here. Mostly full kitchen equipment. There are strainers! So, I got some coffee & filters to use while I'm here. Will get new pour over tools when I move into my place. I wanna see what the space is like with cabinets, layouts & whatnot. I'll be living there for a few years (as long as nothing goes wacko) and will probably change stuff out to make it more home.

That last place was terrible!

It was an old house that was partially renovated, but the owners have crap Check List & Upkeep List for the place. It was so dirty. Exterior was covered in webs, plant/etc debris and there was a huge block of black mold on the exterior fireplace chimney + house wall. Laundry room had at minimum 2 pipe leaks, exposed insulation in a few spots, and everything outside and inside smelled like animal musk/piss. Obvious water damage water stains in the ceiling everywhere.

I really did not like that house, but it's hard to find a whole house at a reasonable rate. So, I just knuckled down, cleaned like crazy, deodorized like mad, sprayed pesticides on the exterior (took 2 weeks to make bugs stop coming in & that's on top of them spraying so much pesticides that it reeked for 2.5 weeks) and made a somewhat sane routine for myself. It was a wonky 2.5 months. Sheesh

I called it the Horror House, cause it's the kind you would see in Freddy Kruger & Jason--slasher flicks where bad things happen to normal people. XD

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Rant

If you are going to use a conjunction at the BEGINNING OF A SENTENCE, make it matter and stand out. Otherwise, it's crap writing! Rewrite! Rephrase! Do over! XD

AHHHHHHHHH~

So, my library has both the audiobook and ebook for The Emperor and the Endless Palace. I borrowed both to take a look see at this book I had thrown on my TBR. If it makes a good impression, I'll go ahead and get it on the current Audible sale.

Controversial reviews on this book, but I'm kinda hoping for a good Eastern story with Western umbrella.

In the ebook, a quote:

Let me lose my mind. It's the only way to love. -Zhu

Followed by a kind of preface:

What if I told you that the feeling we call love is actually the feeling of metaphysical recognition, when your soul remembers someone from a previous life?

How would that change the way you look at each stranger, knowing that they could be the epic romance across all of your lifetimes?

I like these little touches. Things that you don't get to linger on and enjoy as much when you listen to an audiobook.

Dang, I miss my phyiscal library of thousands. =(

Back to book, nice intro. Even though the author has SEVERAL paragraphs starting with conjunctions. I swear, what's with the editors nowadays? This is one of those things you point out and talk about. =P

Audio:
Pro - Correct pronunciation of Chinese.
Cons - Narrator ssssssss everything is ssssssss.

Libby can only go to 3x speed but it's enough to make the sssssss less annoying. XD

Hahaha, there's nothing like the weird hacks you do to get food/beverage when in between houses lol.

I'm 100% team tea, so all I need is a kettle and my trusty teapot, but I can feel your pain when I watch my brother fiddle with his coffee beans grinder and fancy espresso machine and saying that "really, it's so much better that way, you should try it" (taste the same to me).

Gotta love mold... I had mold issues in my old apartment I moved out of in 2015...

I was a clueless first time tenant and lived there for 6 years in 2 different apartments, but I heard so many bad things in the time I was looking for a new place and a new car (timelines overlapped)...

Ran into a building maintenance worker at a car dealership and he had alot to say about working for the landlord/building manager, and I heard a bit more from new landlords...

I had an inklings, leading up to that, when they tried to show me other apartments I could move into and stay with them as a tenant... I saw some real shitshow apartments that really shouldn't have been shown to me until they'd been cleaned up more...

Lost a fair bit of my stuff in that move, similar to you, Soo... including my old Magic: The Gathering cards, even tho they'd been collecting dust for 5 years at that point, still sad...

Also, in my new place, I definitely feel like I stuck to mold-resistant materials more, to cut down on risks... sturdy plastic tables, lots of plastic storage tubs, etc etc etc... none of that common corkboard wooden furniture...

message 1243: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Yeah, unfortunately the type of building materials that are used to build houses and apartments in the past 30 years are not weather resistant.

There should be classes on home awareness and seasonal upkeep. A place can seem ok and well maintained, but have major issues that affect health over long exposure in walls, etc.

Like 80+ years ago, people knew the basics of what it takes to build a house and how to treat it so things will be weather resistant and then aired out until chemicals aren't fuming.
