a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 19 comments General update for March.

Speed-read the mindbending Banzeiro òkòtó: Uma viagem à Amazônia Centro do Mundo and interviewed the Italian translators. I'm still trying to write a coherent review.

A couple of excellent graphic novels set in the forests: The Forest and Through the Woods. Currently finishing the mindbending (literally, as in psychedelic) and hilarious Tu sueño imperios han sido.

Up next are Piranesi, a Le Guin marathon, then a couple of Delany, but it'll be June by then.

Poor Things by Alasdair Gray after seeing the movie and
Don't Fear the Reaper (The Indian Lake Trilogy, #2) by Stephen Graham Jones as a re-read before finishing the series with the last installment.

I had no idea that "Poor Things" was a book first! Let us know how you feel about the book vs. film.

inciminci | 649 comments I didn't either, Erika, I started seeing people here on GR reading it, so I discovered it. Sure, I'll let you know what I think!

They Lurk
I’m afraid I’m not impressed. So far each story is overlong and underpowered.

With each book I've read by Malfi, I'm liking his stories less and less.
I have a few of his books sitting on my shelves, but I hesitate to even open a book by him any more.

Started a mummy book for the Song Title Challenge: The Heart of the Mummy (Avery & Carter Book 3) by Shane Carrow The Heart of the Mummy

It's the third book in a series, with the first being about a vampire and the second a werewolf. All are worth reading.

Jennifer Setaro | 68 comments Read Gray After Dark Gray After Dark by Noelle W. Ihli recently and absolutely loved it. Not sure if this would officially be categorized as horror... but I was horrified. I enjoyed the writing so I'm trying another book from this author now:)

Christopher Conlon (goodreadscomchristopherconlon) | 530 comments The Hand of Kornelius Voyt by Oliver Onions
The Hand of Kornelius Voyt

This vintage tale from the author of “The Beckoning Fair One” started well, but pretty quickly faded for me.

Grim (squishywan) Funland

Have slowly been making my way through Funland. This is not my first Laymon book but I do wonder whether it will be one of his scary ones or a slow burner like Quake. Only on page 100 at the moment and so far nothing too outstanding but its moderately thick so plenty of space to pick up.

Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera
I want the 2.5 hours back I wasted on this piece of crap before finally giving up and skipping to the uninspired and totally transparent twist ending.

Philip Fracassi

This collection came out 4/5/24. Excellent 14 stories. If you haven't yet read Fracassi, you're in for a treat! He has two other collections, novellas and four novels. Cinematic language and tight dialogue. Recommended most urgently.

Best wishes!

This is not the most plot-heavy book, but it makes up for it with expert characterization and tension-filled atmospheric writing. The visceral fear I felt reading this, OMG! It would've been even more immersive if I read this during a snowstorm to match the book's setting. I'm very impressed with how elegantly and poetically Sierra conveyed the nasty, ugly, frightful stink of fear and rage, and the uniquely female experience of navigating motherhood and womanhood in the face of society's judgement.

Chainsaw is the first of a trilogy, so I'm now on to the second book, Don't Fear the Reaper.

message 191: by Rosalyn (new)

Rosalyn | 47 comments Dark, theatrical, atmospheric, classic Gothic horror done right. It is deceivingly hard to write in the tone of a different period and describe the setting of a bygone era, but the Victorian era is Purcell's playground, you can tell she feels comfortable in it and writes beautifully without it being too flowery. The horror elements are gradually introduced, a shadow that grows darker and encompasses more as you read on, spinechilling.
